Andrew was a farmer. He is listed in the 1786 tax list and in the 1790 census in Hempfield To wnship, Westmoreland County, PA, in 1790 with a new wife. He moved to Blacklick Township, Ind iana Co., PA and bought land in Newport in 1795. In 1800 he lived in Selwickley Township, Bea ver Co., PA with his wife and three children. In 1802 Andrew received a federal land grand ce rtificate for Section 1 of Salem Township, Columbiana Co., OH. Andrew served as ranger on th e frontier in Chris. Truby's Co. (PA Archives Ser. 3, Vol. 23, p. 222 & 320) He appears in th e 1808, 1809, and 1810 tax lists for Columbiana Co. and in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census i n Salem Township. In 1820 (page 65) (000101-00001-01); he lived next door to his son Lewis (L udig). In 1830 (page 437) he and his wife are listed as ages 60-70 with one son (age 30-40) ; he lived near his sons Andrew and Lewis (Ludwig) and brother Peter. In 1840 son John live d nearby. Andrew died at age 78.

  • Andrew died at age 78. His will was dated 25 Jan 1842 in Columbiana Co., OH. Andrew indicates he was going to marry the widow Mary Low (?) and what she should have after he dies. The third part of the will divides his land up between his son Louis and his daughter Sally or Sarah who is married to Christian Seidner. Christian Seidner, his son in law, is appointed his executor. Nothing is mentioned of his son Andrew. Andrew's signature is on the will.

Will of Andrew Altman:

  • I Andrew Altman of Salem Township, Columbiana County and Sate of Ohio, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following -
  • First. So soon after my decease as it reasonable can be done admit my executor herein after named to pay all my expenses of last sickness, funeral expenses and my just debts.
  • Second. Intending and expecting to marry the widow Mary Sere, in case that I should marry her and die before she shall die, that my executor give her one bed and bedding including bed stead and one ord?, Also all the furniture and property she shall bring with her and which may be in being at the time of my death; And, further that, he, my executor hereafter named or whoever else may execute this will, pay to the sad Mary Sere in case of my marriage with her as aforesaid explained, she intend of one thousand dollars, or sixty dollars per annum so long as she shall remain my widow, to be paid at the end of each year, and I charge the payments of this said ... typing to be contined...

For and in consideration of five hundred dollars by Christain Sidner of Columbiana County and Lewis Altman of Summit County, of state aforesaid granted, bargained sold, remissed and quit claimed unto Christain Sidner and Lewis Altman and their heirs and assigns forever all my Rights and Title of Dower or yearly income particularly mentions in my late husband Andrew Altmans last will and testament bearing date the twenty fifth day of January, 1842, that is Sixty Dollars a year during my lifetime which the rail property was bound for the payment of said yearly income together with all and singular the hereditiments and appentenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and all claims or right of dower that I have either of yearly income or claim of Rail property of my deceased husband Andrew Altman either in law or equity....etc.
