1837 November 15th Masontown [Pennsylvania]Dear Brother Jacob.I again sit down to write a few lines to you to inform you how we are and how we are doing. Through mercy we are all alive and the family are all in pretty good health but my health is not good. I never see a well day since I had that sore affliction in the winter of thirty three [1833].I have not been able to do a days work since that winter, many days I can not do any work.My working days are past. My constitution is broken by sore afflictions. My 3rd and 4th sons are all the help I have.I try to keep them at work but our trade is good for nothing here.We can get but little cash for our work in this place.I have been trying to sell my house and lot in order to leave this reagion of the county and get a better place some where for our business but I can not sell.I have offered my property very low in order to get away.I have hard work to rub along these times.I am much in debt and I can not help it the way I am situated here.We must have food and rament.I some times hardly know what to do.That debt I owe you has caused me a many an uneasy hour.I would freely pay it if I could get the money.Nothing would afford me more pleasure but I can not see how to pay you at this time unless I can sell my house and lot and a horse that I have.I would do this freely if I could get such money as you would take for it, a ___ pearse from the letter you wrote to me dated August 2nd that you will not and can not take anything from me but silver and I know I can not get that in this part of the world at this time for it is very hard to get.I would like to accommodate you with it if I new how to contrive to get it but this I know not.The letters Mr. Walters showed me in forms me that you have bought another farm.I would be glad to pay you if I only could. You complain in Walterses letter because I did not write to you.Now believe me Dear Sir, I did write directly after I received your letter dated August 2nd in this year and I am surprised that you did not get it.I took the pains to get the post master to indorse it for me in order that it might be _____ right, it was in dorsed Carrolton County, Carrolton/post office and why it mis carried I can not tell.No my dear and much respected Brother I hope you will not be angerry with me because I have told you the truth of my situation and have revealed to you my poor condition.I still am in hopes that I will be abel some day to pay you honestly.I will try my best and as soon as I can _______.I will do it and I will write to you when I can. Give my respect to Sally and now I must close this unwelcome messenger by subscribing myself your unworthy and afflicted Brother and well wishes so long as I live.Soloman Altman
