"The Ohio Refugee Tract was 103,527 acres of land located in Franklin, Fai rfield, Licking and Perry County Ohio. It extends for 42 miles eastward f rom the Scioto River along the south line of the US Military district. F or the first 30 miles it is four and one half miles wide and for the easte rnmost twelve miles it is 3 miles wide. This was determined before the e nd of the war, before the British were defeated so after the war the Oh io Refugee Tract expanded to a wider range. The land was awarded to foreig n, or so called foreign, people that immigrated during the reconstructi on of the united states during the war. Because Peter served, even thou gh he was militia, because he was German, was granted a portion of the lan d. He died before the land was awarded to him. The next of kin would ha ve gained the land. The next of kin was John Altman and Anna Swope. Sin ce John was already established in Westmoreland Co. PA the land in Ohio we nt to his son David Altman. By that time Ohio was already a State. Dav id and His wife were the First Altman's to settle on High street Columb us Ohio and build a farm off of Deshler Ave, at that time Altman Lan e, in Columbus Ohio. Although Peter Served he never actually got to see t he land he was granted and neither did his son. When David came par ts of the land was set as an Orange Orchard by another farmer. But David s howed the grant to the farmer and the trees were removed and David farm ed on the land. It later was passed down to other children and eventual ly my gguncle John Fredrick who was a butcher. It was called the Altman H eld Farm. My dad used to visit the farm all the time because The Altman Company w as right down the street. My dad remembers his Great Uncle John talk abo ut his grandfather and the fight over the Orange Trees. Funny ."
