Lyst Coll., 1805; M.O.O.C. 6/2 en 7/123, testament nr. 51/24, en G.R. II, A-O, p. 516.

II. By eleven o'clock we reached the farm (Palmietrivier) of (Jacob) Eksteen where we halted for refreshment before continuing along the highway eastwards passing (Houwhoek and Botrivier) and various loan places before arriving in the evening at the farm (Matjesdrift on the Zwarte River) of the Field Cornet (Andries) Otto where we were again sumptuously entertained

Bredekamp & H.E.F.Plueddeman): ….I believe that if the Bushmen heard the Gospel they would surely be saved. That would make them very different. That would be an advantage for all the land……I know them well, as I lived close to them for nine years. If you treat them well there is no trouble. The Christians themselves cause them to be so wicked, for the Christians try to kill them and shoot them wherever they can. One commando of Christians after the other sets off for this purpose. I myself often accompanied them. Once I went with them when three hundred were shot by the commando. These people are very strong. Compared to them the Hottentot are weak. The Bushman are also Hottentots and others who were driven away by the Christians or who were treated badly and who now live inland the bush, and the mountain, are people now living by stealing. When they are hungry they appear in large numbers and drive off the cattle of the Christians who live near them
