Dries Steenkamp (1941 – 2018)
Brief overview:
Dries (77), was attacked in his home on his farm Potlootspruit about 10 km outside Lydenburg in the early hours of Thursday, presumably by four masked men. Shortly before he was attacked in his room, his small house dogs barking awoke him.
He had been living alone on the farm for years.
Steenkamp could reach his revolver in time and when the three attackers entered the room, a gunfight broke out. He is hit in the right thigh, left calf and right side. It is not clear at this stage whether he has also shot one of the attackers.
Naudé was on the scene shortly after the shooting. According to Naudé, the robbers shot eight shots at his brother-in-law and Dries fired all five bullets in his firearm.
The robbers fled without having stolen something from his house.
The police found the suspects had access to the farmstead by removing the burglar bars from one of the kitchen windows.
Sgt. Police spokesperson Gerald Sedibe said one of Steenkamp's large dogs was later found dead on the property. The animal is suspected of being poisoned.
A murder charge is now being investigated against the suspects.
Naudé says at this stage no funeral arrangements have been made yet.
Exactly 24 hours after 77-year-old Dries Steenkamp was attacked and severely injured on his farm, he died of complications.
Steenkamp's brother-in-law, Theo Naudé, says the bullet that hit Steenkamp in the left side caused too much internal damage. He was, among others, hit in the kidney.
Steenkamp underwent emergency surgery in the Midmed hospital in Middelburg on Thursday.
"The doctors were happy with the operation but said the next 48 hours would be critical."
About 02:00 this morning his condition worsened and he died at about 03:00, Naude says.
Steenkamp's wife, Petro, was next to his bed.
