Hi I Shirley Wyson had this report carried out to find out

  • A report that was carried out for "Who are the parents of Margaret Celia, Ann Marie and Joseph A Alexander"
  • And "Who are the parents of Jessie and Sarah Jane Alexander
  • Page 1/ The following key points regarding the parents of Margaret Celia and where Margaret Celia and her siblings resided in their earlier years supports the correct parents as being the two convicts, Ann Clarke, Earl of Liverpool and John Alexander, Medina: • John Alexander arrived on the Medina 29 Dec 1823 and on 6 Jan 1824 was assigned to William Howie in Minto. On the 5/10/1824, John Alexander was convicted at Penrith for stealing and following was sent to Port Macquarie until the 15/11/1827 (3 years). As per convict records John Alexander (Medina) returned on the 20/11/1827. He was listed as being transferred from Port Macquarie back to Hyde Barracks and for a period of time was sentenced to the Phoenix Hulk. Census 1828 lists John Alexander residence as being Phoenix Hulk, Sydney. The Phoenix Hulk was a convict ship which became damaged beyond repair after hitting the Sow and Pigs Reef in the Sydney Harbour. After being struck the ship was floated and assessed for damage and following was taken and moored in Lavender bay. Commencing May 1825 the damaged vessel was used as a prison hulk. • John Alexander (Medina) obtained his Certificate of Freedom 9 Apr 1830. ALEXANDER John Medina 1823 30/0188 9 Apr 1830 Certificate of Freedom [4/4301; Reel 986] Therefore John Alexander was only at Minto 9 months before being sent to Port Macquarie for 3 years and following remained in Sydney for 3 years at least until 1830. Margaret and her husband, William Anderson who appear to have no connection with Port Macquarie except for Margaret’s father, John Alexander having been assigned there until 1827, William Anderson’s sister, Jessie Thomas/Leaske (nee Anderson) was already residing there. Jessie married Robert Thomas in Port Macquarie in 1858, 1-2 years before her brother, William Anderson briefly resided at Port Macquarie. The Denham family (i.e., William Anderson’s mother and step father) and also William Anderson’s brother, David Anderson (Shipwright after his father and step father) relocated to and passed away at Port Macquarie. William and Margaret relocated to Walcha and following returned to Sydney before they passed away. There is high probability that due to his insolence and for the theft of a pair of trousers, John Alexander was retained/housed for the remainder of his sentence (1827-1830) in the Phoenix Hulk - Prison and worked chained in a road gang during the day. Hyde Barracks and prisons where documented as being full. Whilst being retained in a semi floating prison/prison hulk in the harbour and having to work in the road gang during the day, John may have developed skills, a liking for the harbour and working as a waterman. The convicts from the Phoenix hulk would have been transported by watermen to and from the ship on a daily basis to perform work as required in the Sydney harbour. • Ann Clarke arrived on the Earl of Liverpool, 5 April 1831 and due to not yet being assigned was taken up the river to Parramatta Girls factory. In July 1832 Ann Clarke was assigned to W. Edney. LIST OF FEMALE CONVICTS ASSIGNED IN THE MONTH OF JULY, 1832. Government Gazette 14 Nov 1832.
  • Page 2/
  • • William Edney (born 1803) Teacher; first Australian-born teacher in NSW.; after being a teacher in Windsor resided at York Street, Millers Point and in 1832 he was residing at Kent Street, Millers Point. Therefore Ann Clarke (Earl of Liverpool) in 1832 was residing in Kent Street, Millers Point; Sydney and would have remained living at that address and assigned to W. Edney until she was married. Female convicts if married were able to leave the person who they were assigned to. York and Kent Streets are only a couple of streets away from Gloucester Street. Ann Clarke (E. Liverpool) and John Alexander (Medina) married in November 1832 (confirmed via BDM and convict records in Sydney). • Ann Alexander of 63 Gloucester Street’s burial certificate notes her burial as being undertaken in the Roman Catholic Church in the Parish of St James in the county of Cumberland. The Marriage certificate of Ann Clarke and John Alexander noted the marriage was undertaken in LD which is the same church, Roman Catholic Church in the Parish of St James. The lettering LD as per BDM represents the Roman Catholic Church, St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. The date of marriage for Ann Clarke (E. Liverpool) and John Alexander as per BDM is the same as their convict records. Ann Clarke (E. Liverpool) records clearly state that she married John Alexander of the Medina – NOT Speke. The same church in which Ann Clark and John Alexander married, is the same church Ann Clarke’s funeral took place as well as the baptism of all their children including Margaret Celia. NOTE: Historians have noted that a record for a marriage, funeral or baptism ceremony held in the 'Parish of St James' refers to this geographical parish, not necessarily meaning the Anglican church of St James, and the church notes that this has been the case for some confusion.[1] A marriage held at the catholic St Mary's Cathedral in the 19th century would be recorded as being in the Parish of St James.[2] Roman Catholic Church, St Mary's Cathedral was on College Street (in the Parish of St James). St Mary's Chapel Status Chapel (1821-1835) Minor basilica (since 1932) Cathedral (since 1835) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parish_of_St_James#cite_note-1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parish_of_St_James#cite_note-2 Another Roman Catholic Church, St Patricks was built in Gloucester Street (Parish of St Philip) near where the family were residing but the building of the church did not commence until 1840. In 1840 William Davis donated the land on which St Patrick’s Church was built, gifting that section of his 1809 grant bounded by Gloucester and Grosvenor Streets. The foundation stone was blessed on 25 August 1840. The church was officially opened on 18 March, 1844. Although this new church was closer to the Alexander’s family home, the baptism certificate for Joseph indicates his baptism took place in the same church as Ann Clark and John Alexander’s marriage, the baptism of his elder siblings, Margaret Celia and Ann and also the funeral of his mother, Ann Alexander (nee Clarke) in 1855. Therefore it can be considered that the ceremonies took place in the St Mary's Cathedral due to selection rather than for reasons such as non-completion of a church or the distance to get to the church. One could surmise several reasons for the family’s selection of St Mary's Cathedral
  • Page 3/
  • (e.g., close ties with the St Marys Church’s congregation, tradition, physical features of the church). It has been indicated Irish Rebels were affiliated with this church. • It has been questioned that if Ann Clarke (E. of Liverpool) was noted to be Protestant; why did she marry in Catholic Church. Convict Records confirm that Ann Clarke (E. of Liverpool) and John Alexander (Medina – Waterman) requested to marry in November 1832. The date of request/convict records match details given in the BDM/marriage certificate. As per BDM records only one Ann Clarke and John Alexander can be found as having married during this period. Therefore it is most likely John Alexander was Roman Catholic and Ann therefore changed her religion to support her husband which is not uncommon. Ann may have said out of fear that she was Protestant who knows. Others have suggested that Ann Clarke and John Alexander were both Irish rebels which therefore would have given them the affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church, in particular St Mary's Catholic Cathedral. Reportedly information can be found in the St Mary's Catholic Cathedral Archives, Sydney, NSW regarding this. For further information/research resources are listed on this website http://members.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/sources.htm. I have not researched this myself. • Funeral notice of Ann Alexander indicates that her husband, John Alexander was a waterman. John Alexander’s place of residence was 63 Gloucester Street, The Rocks at the time of Ann Alexander’s death. • Both Margaret Celia Anderson and Ann Kyneur’s death certificates confirm their father was a waterman. This combined with Ann Alexander’s obituary notice demonstrates John Alexander was working as a Waterman in 1837 and was still working as a Waterman in 1855, not as a labourer in Smithfield. Other supporting evidence regarding the siblings which ties the family together are the family funeral notices, in particular those placed by Ann Kyneur in the Sydney Morning Herald (Trove). • Margaret Celia, Ann and Joseph were born and Baptised in Sydney. This has been documented on Genealogy webpages by several family members. Joseph Alexander’s Roman Catholic Baptisms record also confirms, the family were residing in Gloster (Gloucester) Street in 1845 and Ann Clarke’s death certificate demonstrates they were still residing at 63 Gloucester Street, The Rocks in 1855. • Joseph Alexander’s notice of marriage to Ann Maria Ripley documents Joseph Alexander is an only son to a John Alexander, late of Sydney (Medina?) – not late of Patrick Plains, Parramatta or Liverpool, which is where John Alexander (Speke) was residing including where he died as per all records created by his descendants. • The marriage certificate (1853) for Margaret Celia and William Anderson confirms Margaret Celia parents were John and Ann Alexander. The marriage certificate (1853) also confirmed that they were residing in the Parish of St. Philips which includes Gloucester Street in 1853. The church they were married in (Church of England) was also located in the Parish of St Philp. The Church was situated at York Street, Clarence and Jamison Streets on a location known as Church Hill. https://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/content_lists/subdivision_plans/city_of_... • Although Margaret Celia and William Anderson were married in the Church of England, Margaret and her sister were buried Roman Catholic and also William Anderson. William
  • Page 4/
  • Anderson family’s faith was however as per William Anderson’s burial and marriage to Bridget Anderson Church of Scots. • Ann Alexander (Kyneur) was also married in Sydney in 1867. • Margaret Celia and William Anderson’s first two born children were born at Gloucester Street, The Rocks or Woodburn Street, Chippendale? I have not been able to locate any records for the eldest two except for the information regarding them noted on 4 other BDM certificates belonging to the family (including death certificates for Margaret Celia and William Anderson and Mary Ann Anderson). Margaret Celia and William Anderson’s 3 rd and 4

the children were registered born at Chippendale, Sydney. • As per records (Assessment Books 1845-1948) there were 3 John Alexanders’ residing in the region of Sydney in the period 1845-1867. 1. Running consecutively (commencing 1845) – there appears to be one John Alexander residing in Gloucester Street, The Rocks. 3 different houses on Gloucester Street (63 [1855-1856],and 142 [1858-1859] and 127 [1863]) followed by Essex Street, The Rocks in 1867. 2. Running consecutively – Another John Alexander resided in 1 Sussex Street (commencing 1845) and following Lindon’s Lane, Sydney (Surry Hills) from 1848 until 1863. Mrs Elizabeth Alexander was listed as residing in 30-31 Lindon lane from 1866 and 1867. Was this the wife of the John Alexander who resided at Lindon Lane until 1863. BDM records ALEXANDER ELIZA 2994/1867 AGE 60 YEARS DIED REDFERN The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Sat 21 Dec 1867 Page 16 Family Notices FUNERAL.—The Friends of the late Mrs. ELIZA ALEXANDER, are invited to attend her Funeral ; to move from her late residence, No. 30 Lindon-place, off Parramatta street, THIS (Saturday) AFTERNOON, at 3 o'clock. J. and G. SHYING, Undertakers, 719. George-street South, opposite Christ Church. 1. Running consecutively another John Alexander resided on Victoria Street, Sydney 1848-(based on evidence/research this was only one house and the John Alexander was most likely to be Magistrate John Alexander esq.) Our John Alexander as we all know from records was renting 63 Gloucester Street, The Rocks. After the passing of Ann Alexander in 1855, and somewhere between the period 1856 to 1863 it appears from the records that this John Alexander relocated to an alternative residential address 127 Gloucester Street West Side (larger home also). In 1858 Ann Wood commenced being a tenant at 63 Gloucester Street, The Rocks. The other two John Alexanders’ remained at their same residential addresses. During the period in question it would appear no other John Alexander relocated to the area. Magistrate John Alexander esq. Victoria Street, Sydney relocated and following died in 1877 in London. NSW Electoral Rolls Index A John Alexander was listed in the Electoral Roll 1870-71 - West Sydney 139 Gloster Street (same incorrect spelling as Joseph’s Baptism certificate). For anyone else listed on the Electoral Rolls as living at that address it was however spelt correctly, Gloucester Street. John Alexander was listed in 1867 as residing at 14 Essex Street. Did John Alexander move back to Gloucester Street and reside at house number 139.

Passing of Ann Alexander The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Tuesday 31 July 1855 p 8 Family Notices FUNERAL.—The Friends of Mr. JOHN ALEXANDER, waterman, are invited to attend the Funeral of his deceased Wife, Ann, to move from his residence, No. 63, Gloucester-street, TOMORROW (Wednesday) AFTERNOON, at 3 o'clock. JAMES CURTIS, undertaker, Hunter-street, July 31st. N.B.— No circulars will be issued. After the passing of Ann Alexander in July 1855; John and Ann’s three children were respectively aged 18 years old, Margaret Celia. Margaret Celia as per records had a two year old child and another on the way, and the two younger children, Ann aged 12 years old and Joseph 10 years old. Did John raise his children with the support of Margaret Anderson and Bridget Anderson/Denham? Bridget Mead/ Anderson and George Denham resided near to John Alexander. At one period of time (1851-1856), George Denham (therefore Bridget Mead/ Anderson) lived on Gloucester Street which would have enabled support to be received. George Denham (therefore Bridget Mead/ Anderson) appeared to have relocated to Port Macquarie after 1863. George Denham was listed in the 1870-71 Electoral Roll at Port Macquarie and reportedly 1869-1870. Ann Alexander (Kyneur) had her first child in Sydney in 1863 aged 20 years old. Margaret Celia relocated to Port Macquarie in between the period of 1859-1861. Margaret and William Anderson’s last child was born in Sydney September 1959, and 1st child born in Port Macquarie was 1861. Margaret’s sister Ann was 17-18 by this stage and her brother Joseph was 15- 16. At this age the requirement for the children to be placed into care by their father, John Alexander less likely. When Margaret left for Port Macquarie she was a mother of approximately 4 children as per BDM records (children noted on birth and death certificates). BDM has the last two of the four children being born in Chippendale (Certain genealogy pages have noted birth being Woodburn Street, Chippendale). If the children were born at Woodburn Street, Chippendale in 1859 this would suggest that William and Margaret Anderson were residing near Redfern and were not residing with their father at Gloucester Street. Joseph Alexander relocated to South Australia (??). Does anyone have the Passenger list for Joseph A. Alexander travelling to South Australia. Did Joseph Alexander travel with his father. When did he travel? He was married in South Australia and passed away in South Australia. We know Joseph travelled prior to his marriage in 1874 and remained in South Australia as per his death certificate. It appears John Alexander had some contact with his children prior to death, otherwise Joseph would not have known his father was ‘late of Sydney’. Joseph somehow must have become aware of the recent passing of his father whilst he was living in South Australia. “Late of something” is used about someone who has died fairly recently but not necessarily in the location of where they were late from. Based on B.D.M records/a family notice placed in a South Australia newspaper regarding Joseph Alexander’s marriage 25 February 1874, John Alexander was late of Sydney. It therefore can be considered that somewhere between the period 1870-25
  • Page 6/
  • February 1874, John Alexander passed away. If John Alexander passed away in Sydney where was he buried or was he put to sea. Did he relocate with Joseph Alexander and pass away? Endless research has been taken to locate information regarding John Alexander’s passing without much luck. It appears Ann Alexander never left The Rock, Sydney for her entire life. Ann Alexander married Emery Kyneur (whose family also resided in the area although originally from France) and following remained in the Rocks until her death (last resided/place of death Kent, Street, The Rocks). Did Ann Kyneur take John Alexander into her care and following advise her siblings of his passing? If this was the case you would anticipate that John Alexander would have been buried at Rookwood but there appears so far to be no record of him there. Burials commenced at Rookwood in 1867. We know Ann Kyneur and Margaret Anderson had a very close relationship as Ann Kyneur wrote a memorial 12 months after her sisters passing. Ann wrote a similar memorial 12 months after the passing of her own son who died when he was aged 14. His passing understandably must have been quite tragic for her. Ann was too young to write about her mother’s passing but if John Alexander passed away after 1870, the children, in particular Ann would have been old enough to put a funeral notice in the paper for her father. Yet despite repeated research, I have not found anything (funeral notice/obituary, B.D.M, grave/cemetery records etc.). I have attempted via exclusion to find an unknown John Alexander buried but so far those researched are related to other families and/or are not correct age. Further to the question of when did John Alexander pass away and where is he buried. As per State, Cemetery/Re-internment records, Ann Kyneur (Alexander) was required to have her mother re-interred to Rookwood in 1901 (date of passing 31/07/1855). Both Ann Kyneur and her mother are buried together. Ann Kyneur’s daughter who passed away at the age of 2 and her son who passed away at the age of 14 are both buried in a grave next to their mother, Ann Kyneur and their grandmother, Ann Alexander. The children were buried directly at Rookwood they were not re-interred at a later stage as some descendants/genealogy web pages have suggested. No re-internment record was listed for John Alexander. • ANDERSON William 17/05/1839 - 622 NRS 15513 [p.003]; Reel 3721 I will note on certain records kept by Rookwood Cemetery there appears to be a bit of confusion about who is actually buried in the grave with the two children (Yves and Ann Elizabeth Kyneur) because a third child was listed (Agnes Kyneur) and another child. I was able to find the correct record and grave of the third child (Agnes) which was actually buried in a nearby grave. The other child buried just appears to be a double up Ann Kyneur’s daughter. A John Alexander does not appear to be buried in either grave. Regarding the internment of those buried at Devonshire cemetery it was indicated by someone that if Ann and John were buried together they may have been re-interred under the one name. This however does not appear to be the case with William Anderson and his daughter as both records are available and both were listed together as being re-interred. I found this to be the case with the

  • Correct Parents:
  • The children’s BDM records and State Records give clear evidence that there are two sets of parents. John and Ann Alexander’s children were all born in the Rocks. BDM records also confirm Ann Alexander herself died Gloucester Street and was buried in January 1855 in Devonshire Cemetery (Sydney) and the other set of parents John Alexander (Speke?) and Ann Wright were buried in Smithfield, Prospect. The following information was obtained from BDM records and Baptism certificates for the children of John and Ann Alexander (nee Clarke), The Rocks, Sydney. • Margaret C Alexander: born 09/06/1837 and baptised in the St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney : Married in Sydney in 1853 - Anderson : first four children all born in Sydney : Death certificate - father Waterman - died Sydney : Buried in Rookwood. Memorial written 12 months later by her sister Ann Kyneur. • Ann Alexander: born 23/02/1843 and baptised in the St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney : Married in Sydney - Kyneur : Ann’s children were all born in Sydney. Death certificate - father Waterman : Buried in Rookwood as Ann Kyneur, buried with her mother, Ann Alexander (nee Clarke). Ann died 1 Jan 1855 at Gloucester Street, The Rocks and was initially buried at
  • Page 9/
  • Devonshire and following was reinterred to Rookwood next to Ann Kyneur’s children in 1901 just prior to Ann’s own passing in 1903. • Joseph Alexander: Born 11/04/1845: Place of residence Gloster Street, The Rocks : baptised in the St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. Married in South Australia. South Australia. The following information was obtained from BDM records and Baptism certificates for the children of John Alexander (Speke?) and Ann Wright: • Jessie Alexander born 1845 and baptised in St. Bartholomew's Church of England & Cemetery at Smithfield Prospect Creek NSW Australia in 1850 (DOB noted as 06/06/1846) : Baptism certificate - father labourer : Married Parramatta same as her mother, Ann Wright’s first two marriages : Jessie children were all born in Smithfield: Buried Smithfield. • Sarah Jane Alexander born 28/12/1848 and baptised in St. Bartholomew's Church of England & Cemetery at Smithfield Prospect Creek NSW Australia in 1850 : Smithfield and father was labourer : Baptism certificate - father labourer : Married Parramatta same as her mother, Ann Wright’s first two marriages and her sister above. Note: Joseph was born April 1845 and Jessie was born June 1845 as per BDM. Baptism documents 1846. Ann Wright’s other children to Samuel Butler in NZ and William Wright (Parramatta/Sydney) also demonstrate, Ann is not the parent of Margaret Celia. Ann Wright’s children were born in New Zealand, Sydney and Parramatta at or near to the gestation period of Margaret, Ann and Joseph in the Rocks, Sydney.

  • • On the baptism records of Jessie and Sarah it is recorded John and Ann Alexander’s of Smithfield are the parents. Reportedly, however this couple never actually married. No marriage records have been found and some of Ann Wright’s descendants claim/are adamant the relationship was defacto only. Note: Historians advise not all marriages have been recorded despite having taken place. The date of marriage can sometimes been located on other records (children baptism records e.g.,). The following descendants of John Alexander (Speke) state they did marry in 1844. http://www.australian-english-genealogy.com/John%20Alexander.html • Records do confirm that Ann Wright/Butler (nee Dunn) was buried as Ann Wright and only 3 of Samuel Butler’s children placed a funeral notice for their mother. A funeral notice from Ann Wright’s children to William Wright and John Alexander’s girls, Jessie and Sarah was not found. • In the Obituary by Samuel Butler’s children for their mother they identified her/their mother as Ann Wright not Butler nor Alexander or Dunn. This therefore confirms the first two marriages and respective children for Ann Dunn, who died as Ann Wright at Smithfield. Ann Wright at the time of her passing/funeral retained the name of a man she had left, William Wright and despite
  • Page 10/
  • not marrying John Alexander she gave the two girls their father’s surname (this is not uncommon practice for some defacto parents). • Several genealogy pages from both Ann Wright (nee Dunn) and John Alexander’s descendants are adamant that the couple had two children. The same researchers/descendant are adamant our John Alexander (Medina) and Ann Clarke (E. of Liverpool) are not the parents of the two girls but only 3 children, Margaret, Ann and Joseph. • William Wright died on Wednesday, 30 May 1877 at Government Asylum, Parramatta, NSW, Australia. • Ann Wright/Butler (nee Dunn) first husband died as a result of drowning whilst being missionary in NZ. Given all of the above and the following I am about to document regarding John Alexander (Speke) we can safely say that the correct parents of Margaret Celia are Ann Clarke (E. of Liverpool died Gloucester Street) and John Alexander (Medina – Waterman) who resided at Gloucester Street. The couple who selected to marry in the Roman Catholic Church and following have their children baptised at the church and also for the funeral of Ann Clarke to take place. John Alexander (Speke II) The following information John Alexander, Speke II strongly supports that John Alexander (Medina – Waterman) is Margaret Celia’s father and clearly demonstrates that John Alexander, Speke II is not Margaret Celia’s father. John Alexander, Speke II convict’s records following demonstrate that he was assigned to the Hunter region and remained there from 1823 until 1840. John Alexander, Speke II convict records state that he was assigned to H.P Dutton, Patricks Plains – Singleton, New South Wales on the 4 July 1823 and whilst residing in Patricks Plains in 1840 his Ticket of Leave was cancelled for harbouring a female convict and following again in Parramatta 1841 for immoral behaviour. Therefore he was residing in Hunter region commencing 4 July 1823 until 1840. He was situated at Parramatta after 1841 and following potentially Liverpool/Smithfield where he conceived children (Jessie and Sarah) with Ann Wright/Butler (nee Dunn?). It is fact that a John Alexander and Ann Wright (nee Dunn) died whilst residing in Smithfield and were buried in Smithfield, Prospect. It is fact that two children were born in Smithfield to a John Alexander who was a labourer not waterman. One of the children was born near to the time Joseph Alexander was born in The Rocks, Glouster (Gloucester) Street. But the child born near to the time of Joseph Alexander Gloucester Street was born and baptised in Smithfield to John Alexander of Smithfield who was a labourer not a waterman.
