About Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien

Anne, the second child born to Jacob Paulsen Huskelien and Ingri Torgersdatter Haugen, was born and raised on Lien under Huskelien (61.56640 9.63336) in the Kvikne sub-parish of Nord-Fron parish, Oppland County. Anne was baptized at the Kvikne Church in Nord-Fron 27 May 1824, with baptismal sponsors Embjør Lien, Jacob Lien, Ole Lien, Kari Kantrud, and Kirsti Syltjordet. Her father died shortly after her first birthday. Her mother had a daughter Anne Hansdatter in 1829, and then married Ole Nielsen, with whom she had a son and two daughters, Jacob, Marit, and Kari. Anne Jacobsdatter is the only one of Ingri's six children who seems not to have been confirmed.

On 4 Sep 1854, while living at Lien under Huskelien, Anne Jacobsdatter gave birth to an illegitimate son, Jacob Hansen. Anne named Hans Engebretsen Steendalen (who married Anne's half-sister Marit 8 Sep 1854) as the father. The church record states, "He denies the paternity." On 29 Dec 1854, at her trial, Anne admitted that she lied about Jacob's father, that her stepfather, Ole Nielsen Huskelien [later Lillevold], was Jacob's father, and Ole also admitted this. Ole and Anne were both convicted of incest, and Anne was convicted of identifying the wrong man as the father of her child. She was sentenced to imprisonment for 20 days on "water and bread."

The last certain record of Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien is 29 Dec 1854, at her court hearing in Sør-Fron. As Anne isn’t with her mother or son in 1865, she has probably died before that time. A lægdslem (pauper) Anne Jacobsdatter, said to be 72 years old, died on Holten under Suleng in Sør-Fron 9 Jul 1856, when Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien was 32 years old. Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien’s next younger half-sister, Anne Hansdatter, then lived on Holten under Suleng with her husband and three young children. Neither Anne Hansdatter nor her husband, Engebret Olsen, had a mother or aunt named Anne Jacobsdatter. A person 72 years old in 1856 would be born about 1784, but no Anne Jacobsdatter the right age can be found on the 1801 census or in Fron confirmation records. As Anne Jacobsdatter Huskelien was 32 then, this is likely her.

On the 1865 census, Anne's son, Jacob, lived on Lillevolden in Sør-Fron with Anne's mother and step-father (Jacob's father and grandmother), Ole Nielsen and Ingri Torgersdatter. This Jacob emigrated with them in 1870.
