About Anne Hansdatter Holten

Anne Hansdatter was born 10 Jun 1829 on the tenant farm Lien under Huskelien (61.56640 9.63336) in the Kvikne sub-parish of Nord-Fron parish, Oppland County, Norway. The daughter of Hans Knudsen of Vågå parish and Ingri Torgersdatter Haugen, Anne Hansdatter was the third of her mother’s six children. Anne was baptized 28 Jun 1829 in the Kvikne church in Nord-Fron, with baptismal sponsors Marit Skjeftskogen, Gulbrand Skjeftskogen, Ole Vallum, Marit Vallum, and Kjersti Syltjordet. Anne was confirmed 15 Jun 1845 at the Sødorp church in Nord-Fron (confirmations are often not at the person’s usual church). At the time of her confirmation, Anne is said to live at the Sylte farm (across the Vinstra River from Huskelien).

By 4 Jan 1851, when her first child was born, Anne lived in Sør-Fron (south Fron) parish. Anne Hansdatter married Ingebret Olsen Kjorstadeie (later known as Engebret Holten) 1 Nov 1851 in Sør-Fron, with witnesses Iver Heggerud and Johannes Johannesen Kjorstadeie. Engebret and Anne had 10 children, all born in Sør-Fron from 1851 to 1872, all but the first two born on the tenant farm Holten under Suleng.

An unconfirmed source says that Anne emigrated in 1879, departing from Oslo 28 Nov 1879 on the SS Hero, arriving at Hull, England, departing from Glasgow, Scotland, on the SS State of Indiana, and arriving at New York 8 Dec 1879.

They settled in Vance Creek Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, near the village of Prairie Farm.

(Due to the issuance by the Statsarkivet in Hamar in 1986 of a birth certificate for the wrong Anne Hansdatter, some of Anne’s descendants erroneously believe that her birth date is 7 Jan 1828, when, in fact, the Anne Hansdatter born on that date left for America 20 Apr 1854 with her parents, two of her siblings, and her two-year-old illegitimate son.)

(Anne’s foot marker says she was born in 1833, but, when she married Engebret Holten, 1 Nov 1851, her age is listed as 22, and on the 1880 US census, enumerated 3 Jun 1880, her age is listed as 50.)

Her findagrave memorial is 87398411.
