About Archibald Casteel Perdew

BEANS COVE

The isolated community of Beans Cove is situated between Tussey Mountain on the east, Evitts Mountain on the west and Martin Hill on the north. It was named after a man named Bean. Some of the first settlers in this area were Perdews, Gordons, and Dickens, and then came the Irishman, James Donahoe. In 1815, he left Rainsburg and bought twelve hundred acres of land in Beans Cove. He was a very influence man, a devoted Catholic, and a family man, raising 12 children. Archibald Perdew built the first brick house in 1858. It is still in good condition and a Cessna family lives in it. Perdew, a Revolutionary War Veteran, is buried in the garden behind the house. The first framed house is also still standing at the base of Martin Hill. It was built in 1860 by Rice W. Growden and later owned by the John Casteel family. Today, the Tuckers own it. A creek called the “Lost Run” flows through Beans Cove. It disappears into the ground and nobody has been able to find out where it surfaces again. The first Perdew had a mill on that creek. Today the Beans Cove is filled with the descendants of Cessna, Bridges, Rice and Logues, to name a few.
