I have often been asked to relate some of the information bearing on the early history of the Maniapoto's and their settlement in the King Country many generations ago. Information which has been handed down in the annals of the Maori Race. Imparted to me by leading members both Male and Female, over a wide stretch of years. While advancing some of the statements as historically, I will point out that the Maori Race has kept for several hundred years very precise records, all by word of mouth but none the less reliable for that, and they can therefore be accepted as veracious. I may have after all these years forgotten some minor points, but as to the major items I have no hesitation in asserting that they are true in substance and fact.
