"Bill Hunt came to Arizona with his family in 1886 when he was fourteen years of age. His parents rented the lower McClure farm in the Sandy Valley and lived there for two years. Later this farm was owned by Jim Boner, brother of Alford. It was, at that time, about the middle of the Sandy River and east of the Kayser place [earlier known as the DeSpain Ranch]. Many years ago the house was moved to higher ground and after that the land washed away by floods.
After living on the McClure place two years, the Hunt family moved about six or seven miles north to the 'stockade house' owned and built by Bill Jennings, an early day carpenter-brick layer and an expert on fireplaces.
The stockade house stood on the river bank, south, and only a short distance from the river crossing near what is now the town of Wickieup, east of the Hardwick farm. This farm was a brush flat for many years after the stockade house and land around it went down the Sandy River.&quot.947 On 15 February 1889 "Mr. Carrow was alone with his wife [who was in labor], no neighbor woman to help out, trouble developed and he was deeply concerned over the situation. Eva, a girl of 15 heard a wagon coming down the road. My grandmother, an experienced midwife, and grandfather Thomas Hunt were coming home from a trip to Hackberry. Eva rushed to the front gate and grandmother was soon out of the wagon and on her way to assist in the birth of Jerome, the Carrow's fifth son.&quot.948
In response to an Indian scare in July of 1889, the isolated families along the Big Sandy who had a place to go took their families to safety. "My Mother's parents and three younger children, Nellie, Lizzie, and Grover, and three grown sons, John, Charley, and Bill Hunt helped their parents pack the big wagon with their belongings for a prolonged stay at their daughter Carrie Bacon's home at Fort Rock. Mrs. Ed Imus and family, also Mrs. Ad Cornwall and daughter, Amy, followed. Rose Imus and Jennie Cornwall were daughters of Tom and Elenor Hunt.949 Thomas Hale Hunt died on 21 Nov 1890 leaving Eleanor Crawford with two teenage daughters and a small son to care for.950,951,952
After the death of Thomas, Eleanor Crawford took over a hotel and with the help of her two daughters she served meals and rented rooms. The hotel was located in at White Hills, Mohave county, Arizona Territory.953
" Bill Hunt's father, [Thomas Hale Hunt], died in 1890 and he and his brother, Charlie, and Shadrick Cordrey, the community handy man, built Grandma Hunt, [Eleanor Crawford], a lumber house where the old Tennille house now stands.
Until a few years ago a tamarisk tree stood beside the hand dug well that supplied the Hunts with water and furnished enough to keep Grandmother's yard green and pretty (by drawing it to the surface in a bucket). There were no fenced fields around this ranch at that time, just around the house and yard. The house was later moved away. The ranch was acquired by Mr. Earl Prosser, Sandy stage driver; later by Mr. Clark, leased by George Cummings and owned for many years by Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Tennille." in 1890.954
On 4 Apr 1899, Eleanor Crawford, called Nellie C. Cornwall, was established the first postmaster at Owens Post Office (modern Wickiup), Owens mining district, Mohave county, Arizona Territory. The mining camp was named for John Owen, aka "Chloride Jack." The camp was in Township 15N, Range 13W, (just south of Wikieup), through which runs the Big Sandy River.955
