About Azz Penny

Find A Grave Memorial 69418907

It is amusing to try to do any research on my grandfather, there seems to be conflicting issues with his legal name. To complicate things even more his youngest son, my father, James Edward Penney uses the extra "e" in our family name. Which does show up others places when researching our Geneology. Dewey Penney's headstone in the Arbala Cemetary also has the extra "e".

My dad's birth certificate shows his father's name was "Joseph Asberry Penny". You can also see on his birth certificate where the "ey" was erased and added a "y" instead. My dad's birth certificate is also not an original, he got a new one filed on Sept 14, 1942 when he went in the military. The story on my dad's confusion of Penny/Penney is one of his school teachers taught him to spell his name Penney.

Text of newspaper memorial of Azz Penny
IN MEMORY OF AZZ PENNY
In the passing Azz Penny, the Arbala community and Hopkins County generally have sustained a grieving loss. By whatever standard of Christian greatness a man may be measured, Mr. Penny met every requirement that God makes of man and that man has a right to expect of his brother.
As a father, he was kind and considerate and well deserved the love his children had for him. The knowledge that they have that their father’s life was great and noble, must surely be an abiding consolation to them, a memory that they will treasure and an inspiration to measure up to their father’s moral and spiritual greatness.
As a citizen and churchman, Mr. Penny had no superior. To his community and the church he loved, he devoted his life, his time and his means. His many friends and associates can truly say of him that his daily life enabled them to view the grandeur of service to others, and of devotion to high ideals. His friendly counsel and able assistance in every church and community enterprise will be keenly missed.
Mr. Penny’s life has been a great inspiration to the writer; never; never did we see him when he was not happy. He has encouraged us so many times and helped us to live a richer and fuller life for the Christ whom he loved so dearly.
It is particularly fitting so near the Easter season to remember that we have divine assurance, that beyond this earthly life there is a life eternal so far transcending life, as we know it, that human intelligence can not comprehend its full meaning and significance. The lives of men like Mr. Penny are more eloquent than any funeral sermon that could be preached or any obituary that could be written. Men like him are living evidence of the power God exercises in human affairs and also evidence that all that is beautiful and noble in human life continues to live and exercise its influence long after the physical body has returned to the earth from whence it came.
With the hope that his family will feel the sense of the Divine Presence in their time of grief, the writer commends them to the Father, whom their loved one worshipped and for whom he labored.
Mr. Penny leaves to mourn his passing his wife, five sons, W.M. and Offie, Orange; Elton, A.J. and James Edward, who are in the service and all overseas; three daughters, Mrs. W.W. Hinton, Arbala; Mrs. Ann Palmer, Dallas; Mrs. Raymond FalmarArbala; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Gamill, Sulphur Springs; Mrs. – Harton, Arbala; two brothers Reese and Mood Penny of Saline.
