About Bailiff, barrister Henrik Johan Paus

Born in the port town of Skien, he was raised from the age of five in the home of his uncle and aunt Johan Andreas Altenburg and Hedevig Altenburg née Paus, his father's sister, known as Altenburggården. He thus became the "social brother" of Marichen Altenburg, who was biologically his first cousin. He was also the biological half brother and close childhood friend of Knud Ibsen. He was named for his mother's first husband Henrich Johan Ibsen, the paternal grandfather of his nephew Henrik Ibsen. Henrik Ibsen may have been named for both him and his own grandfather.

Henrik Johan Paus was a lawyer and graduated with his law degree at the Royal Frederick University (the University of Oslo) in 1822. From 1823 to 1826 he was the deputy governor of Hedemarken County. From 1826 to 1830 he was sheriff of Hof in Solør. From 1830 to 1843 he practised as a barrister in Hedemarken; he represented the industrial company Røros Copper Works, banks and the government in all cases before the courts in Hedemarken, and also served as acting judge. In 1843 he became bailiff of Østerdalen, and in 1858 he became bailiff of Øvre Romerike. He owned the estate Østerhaug in Elverum from 1834 to 1859. He retired in 1860 and moved to his hometown Skien, where he bought the farm Lille Follestad.

He was the half-brother of Knud Ibsen (Henrik Ibsen's father) and the brother of Christian Cornelius Paus, the city judge, magistrate, chief of police and city recorder of Skien, Member of Parliament and acting Governor of Bratsberg (Telemark)
