About Barbara Johanna Elisabeth Langerman

The wedding below was somewhat of a shotgun event as her son Guy was born just a few months later in April. In all she was married for just over six years and when she died she left behind four minor children (see probate information below). The length of time they were married would appear to make it unlikely that she had 10 children as stated by Louis Eksteen in his book on the Voortrekkerbegrafplaas Pietermaritzburg. I have gone through all the church and civil records of the six years of their marriage that I can find and so far have been unable to find records of any other children. Melissa Langerman

The film contains various land grants, government contracts, oaths of allegiance and government memorials as well as marriage licences issued between Dec 1847 to Dec 1846 Film # 008154855 image 2096

Their licence granted February 9 1856 by the resident magistrate of Pietermaritzburg to allow them to marry without the publication of banns. George Lamond 22, born in Gibraltar, residing in Pietermaritzburg Barbara Johanna Elizabeth Langerman, 19, born in Cape Town, residing in Pietermaritzburg.

Probate of her estate was only initiated in 1891. Among the documents is a death notice dated Dec 11 1891 which lists her surviving children (presumably in 1891) and the dates on which they were born. The children are: Guy Bouvrie 26 April 1856 Catherine Caroline 3 Sep 1857 Johanna Cornelia 16 May 1859 Sophia Maud 25 Dec 1860

Her age at death is given as 24 and it is stated she died in June 1862, no date is given.

Three of her children Guy Lamond, Catherine Caroline (Bemister) and Sophia Maud (De Kock) attend the meeting to appoint an executor on December 24 1891. A letter from Guy Lamond is included in the documents, in this letter, dated 9 April 1892 he gives up his share of his first wife's estate (they were married in community of property) so that it can be shared among her children. The distribution account shows each of the four children "being the only children of the deceased" each receive a fourth of the estate. The three daughters, including Johanna Cornelia (Jackson) are all described as widows. The estate is a property, subdivision A of erf 24 Berg Street Pietermaritzburg valued at 180 pounds. Three of her children agree in writing to sell it for 250 pounds, the fourth Johanna Cornelia was unable to be contacted as she was in Australia. After administrative expenses and rates for the property paid by George Lamond for 30 years (46 pound 17 shillings and sixpence) are deducted, the amount to be split between the children is 185 pounds 13 shillings and sixpence. The estate is finalised on April 30 1892. The estate documents also state that when Barbara died she left "four minor children" so any other children she had must have died before she did.
