About Barbara Pierce Bush, 38th First Lady of the United States

Barbara Bush (née Pierce; June 8, 1925 – April 17, 2018) was the wife of George H. W. Bush, who was the 41st President of the United States, and served as First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. She had previously served as Second Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Among her six children are George W. Bush, the 43rd President, and Jeb Bush, the 43rd Governor of Florida.

Interesting note about the birth place of Barbara Bush. Booth Memorial Hospital was at the time of Mrs. Bush's birth. Booth Memorial was originally founded by the Salvation Army as a maternity hospital for unwed mothers. While this would be an unexpected place for Barbara's mother, Pauline Pierce, to choose, as it so happened her physician regularly volunteered there, and so Mrs. Pierce chose to go there (rather than something closer to home in Rye, NY) to have her daughter Barbara. In 1925, when Barbara was born, Booth Memorial Hospital was at 312 East 15th Street in Manhattan, across from Stuyvesant Square Park. In 1954, when Barbara Bush was 29 years old, the Salvation Army closed the hospital in Manhattan and transferred the name "Booth Memorial Hospital" to a newly-built facility in Flushing, Queens. Because few people today know that Booth Memorial Hospital had ever been in Manhattan, it is regularly assumed by many that since Barbara was born in the hospital of that name, she must have been born in Flushing. However, that is not correct, and her birthplace should be changed to East 15th Street in New York County, NY.

Barbara Pierce was born in New York City. She met George Herbert Walker Bush at age 16, and the two married in Rye, New York, in 1945, while he was on leave during his deployment as a Naval officer in World War II. They moved to Midland, Texas, where he entered political life, in 1950.

As First Lady of the United States, Bush worked to advance the cause of universal literacy, founding the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
