About Benjamin Cheney

Biography

Son of Thomas I & Jane Atkinson Cheney. He married first Mary Unknown who died in 1705, and after she died he married Mary Herbert 14 Nov 1706 in Charlestown, Suffolk, MA - parents of Joseph B 1709.

Benjamin Cheney was born at Roxbury, Massachusetts, on 29 Jan 1675-76, the son of Jane (Atkinson) Cheney (1635-abt.1724) and Jane (Atkinson) Cheney (1635-abt.1724).[1]

Before his first marriage, Benjamin Cheney of Cambridge and Mary Page of Watertown conceived a child out of wedlock. They "managed to elude the authorities for 17 months after their bastard was born clandestinely in 1698. Cheney’s twenty pounds supported the mother and financed the child’s long-term fostering. Only his boasting of his paternity incriminated him."[2]

Benjamin Cheney married Mary Cheney. No record has been found of the marriage, but in 1718 Benjamin conveyed to his brother-in-law Josiah Cheney all his own interest and that of the children of his “first wife, Mary Cheney, daughter of Joseph Cheney, late of Medfield” in the estate of her father.[3] Their first child, Mary Cheney, was born on 21 Apr 1702.[4] They were first cousins, both grandchildren of William Cheney (abt.1603-1667) and Margaret (Unknown) Cheney (abt.1604-1686).

The widower Benjamin Cheney of Cambridge, Massachusetts, married Mary Harbert at Charlestown, Massachusetts, on 14 Nov 1706.[5]

Benjamin Cheney died at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 13 Jul 1718.[6] Administration of his estate was granted to Mary Cheney, his widow, on 9 Jan 1718/19. Guardians were appointed for his minor children, Benjamin, Thomas, Mary, Hannah, Joseph, Ebenezer, Ruth, John, and William.[3]
