About Thomas Cheney, Jr.

Biography

Thomas Cheney was born on Christmas Day, 1658, a son of Thomas Cheney and Jane Atkinson; he married at Roxbury, September 24, 1684, "Hannah Wooddis" (born in 1658; died June 5, 1720). He was a merchant, residing in Roxbury.

Thomas "owned the covenant" in the church at Roxbury on April 13, 1684; his wife was accepted into "full communion" three years later, in February of 1687. He died March 7, 1717, and his will, dated Jan. 1, 1716-17, was proved on March 18; his widow, Hannah, and his sons Ebenezer and Henry, were named as executors.

In the will, he ensured that his wife would have the comforts of the home during her lifetime; he left thirty pounds apiece to his two sons Thomas and John -- the latter receiving the bulk of his legacy "upon his freedome from his Apprenticeship". To his daughters, Margaret Tucker and Hannah Butler, he left ten pounds each, and to his unmarried daughter, Millicent, fifty pounds. Sons Henry and Ebenezer were to inherit his lands and "all his rights at Woodstock," and as executors were to pay the legacies named. In a codicil, he added "an acre of land at Gardners Corner" and "rights at Woodstock" to John's share... and added two cows to the legacy share of his daughter Millicent.

Woodstock was at that time included in Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay. The tract was later divided and the division resulted in the formation of several towns, but the name remained -- given to that part which fell within Connecticut.
