About Benjamin Crispe

Benjamin Crispe was a mason by trade, a servant of Maj. Edward Gibbons, and a proprietor of Watertown, Massachusetts.

Crispe arrived in the colonies in 1629 to serve as a servant to Maj. Gibbons in 1629. He was likely part of the major's 1635 expedition to explore the mouth of the Connecticut River, which resulted in the founding of the Saybrooke Colony, later part of the Connecticut Colony and in the area now known as Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Crispe owned land in both Groton and Watertown, Massachusetts. On May 24, 1681, the selectmen of Watertown chose him to be caretaker of the meetinghouse as well as poundkeeper, at a salary of 4 10 s.
