Biography

From “Who Begot Thee? Some Genealogical and Historical Notes Made in an effort to trace the American progenitors of one individual living in America in 1903” By Gilbert O. Bent, 1903:

Joanna Goffe was born about 1619 (age 78 at death in 1698) in Firsby, Lincolnshire, England, daughter of Thomas Goffe, a merchant and ship-owner of London and a member of the company which " floated " the Pilgrims. He was probably the owner of the " Mayflower " on her memorable voyage of 1620 as well as on her later voyages to America of 1629 and '30. He was also the first Deputy-Governor of the Massachusetts company. He died when on a voyage to America to look after his commercial interests in New England. He lost heavily by his "adventures" with the Pilgrims.
Some have erroneously used Frisby as her birthplace; however, http://gazetteer.org.uk/ clearly identifies Firsby as a place in Lincolnshire and Frisby as a place in Leicestershire. The name of her mother is not known; some say Cutter, some say Young, some say Holney. [3]
Joanna was married twice - first to William Longley about 1640 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, and second, to Benjamin Crispe (as his second wife) after the death of William, November 29, 1680. William was the son of John Longley and Ann Pearson Longley. [1] [2] [4]
Joanna Goffe died in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts April 18, 1698. She is buried in the Phipps Street Burying Ground, in Charlestown. [2] [3] [5]

From https://nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com/2012/12/surname-saturday-cri...

Benjamin Crisp married first to Bridget, maiden name unknown, with whom he had eight children. He married second to Joanna Goffe, widow of William Longley. Her son William Longley, Jr. married Benjamin Crisp’s daughter, Deliverance Crisp. William and Deliverance were killed in an attack on Groton, Massachusetts in 1694. Five of their children were also killed and three taken captive. There is a monument to the Longley family off Longley Road in Groton. In her will Joanna Crisp remembered these missing grandchildren: “I give and bequeath unto my three Grand-Children that are in Captivity if they returne, these books one of them a bible, another a Sermon booke treating of faith and the other a psalms book” One child returned, one became a nun in Canada, and the last one's fate is unknown.
