About Benjamin P Hardin, II
Alternate place of birth: Richmond, Henrico county, Virginia.
Benjamin II Hardin was born on 28 Feb 1780 to Joseph Hardin Sr. and Jane Gibson. He was named after an older brother (Benjamin Hardin I) who was killed by Indians in 1778 and was referred to as Ben Two. He moved to Tennessee with his parents. His father Col. Joseph Hardin Sr. was awarded large land grants in what is now Tennessee for his Revolutionary War service. Hardin county Tennessee is named after his father Col. Hardin.
On 7 Dec 1801 Benjamin II Hardin took out a marriage bond in Knox county, Tennessee to marry Martha Ann "Patsy" Barnett. His brother-in-law Ninian Steele was his bondsman. Benjamin II Hardin and Martha Ann "Patsy" Burnett were married on 10 Dec 1802 in Knox county, Tennessee.
In 1817, Benjamin II Hardin was appointed to organize a new county, which he did, that became Wayne County, Tennessee, in 1819. He was elected Sheriff, and by just being elected, bad man John Murrell chose to leave the area. In 1825, Benjamin served as Legislator for the State of Tennessee. Others to hold office included: James K. Polk, and Sam Houston. He represented seven counties, and served the public until 1833.
In May of 1839, Benjamin II Hardin, his wife and most of his family moved to what is now Polk county, Texas. He applied for a land grant for 640 acres and received a warrant from the Commissioners of the Land Board for the Liberty Land Survey. He died on 25 Nov 1845 in Polk county, Texas. His land warrant and the land that he inherited when his oldest son George Washington Hardin died, passed to his wife Martha Ann "Patsy" Hardin. In 1848 she transferred this warrant and land to her surviving children.
