About Benjamin Tanner

1.Benjamin, b 24 Dec 1692. Husband of: Deborah Stillman: m. 13 Apr 1741

William Tanner b 1660 Eng, d S Kingstown, RI. He m1 Hannah Tibbetts, dtr of Henry Tibbetts & Sara Stanton. She b 1664 Kingstown, RI, d S Kingstown, RI. He m2 Mary Babcock. He m3 Elizabeth Cottrill. Earliest record found was when William Tanner witnessed deed in May 1682 in S Kingstown, RI. It’s believed he emigrated from western Eng or Wales, some conjecture Swansea as this is where most Eng Baptists were from & Tanners were ‘good Baptists.'

  • NOTE: Baptists, Quakers and many other dissenters came from all parts of England, Scotland and Wales therefore using that as a conjecture for origin is spurious. Other's were of Huguenot descent, like the Cottrell (Coterel original spelling) family whose origins were originally in France. They were also Seventh Day Baptists who held very different views from other Baptist groups, and separated from them early after emigration from England.
