Biography

Jane Tanner, wife of William West, and apparently daughter of William and Mary (Babcock) Tanner, was born in Westerly, Rhode Island, about 1702. [1]

She was the second wife of William West married about 1722. 27 July 1741, the Town Council of Charlestown, Rhode Island ordered "William West wife and childre" be transported to No. Kingstown. William and some family members were in West Greenwich as guests of Benjamin Tanner by July 1742, then that town council asked Tanner for an explanation. A William West is was taxed (rates) 19 Jan 1744 for South Kingstown.[1]

After William's death, Jane married at Richmond, Rhode Island in 1751 John Hill, born at Westerly , Rhode Island 3 Oct 169[9], son of John and Mary Hill. John and his first wife, Mercy, had about 10 children. About 1737/8 he removed to Stonington, Connecticut, and then to Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, paying taxes there 1747-1756.[1]

John Hill and his wife Mercy joined the Westerly Sabbatarian Church 1740-50 as did William and Mary West. In 1747, a John Hill was listed in Charlestown , Rhode Island. John Hill of Westerly, Rhode Island, and his wife Jane Hill sold 12.75 acres of land 3 Sept 1756. On 31 Jan 1758 John Hill of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, cordwinder, and Jane Hill his wife sold 30 acres to Joshua Lanphear, of Hopkinton. In July 1768 John Hill, of "Oblong, New York", was in the Hopkinton, Rhode Island, Sabbatarian Church records.[1]

Jane Hill died perhaps in Dutchess Co., New York after 31 Jan 1758 (deed) died after 27 July 1741 and perhaps by July 1742.[1]

From Samuel West's Memorandum Book:[2]

"My grandfathers name was William West his sons names ware William John Joseph Benjamin Thomas Francis Hezekiah and Ebenezar his daughters names ware Deborah Abiah Jane & Susanna. "My fathers mother was Jane Tanner Daughter of Frances Tanner hur mother was a Babcock hur Brothers names ware William Benjamin John Frances & Nathan hur sisters names ware Mary Avis Abigail Rechel Ann & Dorcas." William West's sibling were exactly as Samuel named them. However there isn't a Francis Tanner available to be the grandfather of Samuel. Instead William Tanner and his wife Mary Babcock had children William, Benjamin, John, Francis, Nathan, Mary, Avis, Abigail, Anna. Rebecca and Elizabeth are known children not listed by Samuel and Samuel listed a Rachel and Dorcas, unknown children.
