Bertha descended from the well-known Wolf(s)thal family of musicians of Galicia. She was the first daughter of Chaim Hirsch (aka Herman), a talented musician, and the granddaughter of the Cantor Meyer Leib from Tysmenitsa. By the time Bertha was born, her father and his brothers moved to Tarnopol where they made their living as musicians.

In 1890, Bertha was living with her father in Tarnopol, house #214.

Bertha married Meilech Somerfeld on 6.3.1894 in Tarnopol (in JRI). The couple moved to Vienna, where their daughter Regina was born in 1902. Berta was still living in Vienna by 1936.

Meylech and Bertha were sent with Transport 31 from Vienna to Theresienstadt on 14.07.1942, where Meylech died on 09.12.1942 and Bertha died on 09.03.1944.

Bertha's birth was registered only at 1892. The wording on the late birth registration follows.
On the 18th of September 1892, as a result of the investigation it has carried out, the High Imperial and Royal Governorship in Lwow permits that following be recorded in the books of births of the Israelite Register Office in Tarnopol: In the year of 1870, in Tarnopol, Chaje Ingber gave birth to a illegitimate daughter to whom, during the blessing, the name was given “Bertha”. The father of this child is Chaim Hersch Wolfstahl, bearing a double name.

Bertha is listed in the Tarnopol census of 1890 (house #214 where she lived with father Herman).
Residence (2)
In the US arrival papers of her sister Rosa Wolfsthal from 1936, Bertha was identified as Rosa's nearest relative. Bertha's address was therein shown as 10 Schiffamtgasse in Vienna. The same address was documented in the Vienna address book of 1920 as the address of Bertha (p. 1274, Sommerfeld spelled with two 'm's), and in 1924, as the address of her daughter Regina.
Marriage
Bertha's marriage record is stamped on her birth record, which as said above, was written only in 1892.
Death
According to YvS, Meylech and Bertha were sent with Transport 31 from Vienna to Theresienstadt on 14.07.1942, where Meylech died on 09.12.1942 and Bertha died on 09.03.1944.
