Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He had a varied military career as a staff and supply officer in the Union Army. Entering the War as a Private in the Captain Steele's Independent Company, Illinois Infantry, Sturgis Rifles, he was later as appointed a Captain and Assistant Quartermaster of the staff of Brigadier General Edward O.C. Ord. Promoted to Major, and made an aide-de-camp on the staff of Brigadier General James B. During the Battle of Gettysburg, he was on the staff of Major General John F. Reynolds, and was with him when General Reynolds was killed on the First Day of the engagement. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". The small marker on his grave gives no mention to his military service.
