John Breckinridge Babcock (February 7, 1843[1] – April 26, 1909) was a US Army officer who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Indian Wars. (Note - his obituary in the New York Times states he was born in 1847, but this is not supported by the Official Army Register.)

Indian Campaigns Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Brigadier General in the US Volunteers. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in the 5th US Cavalry for action on May 16, 1869 at Spring Creek, Nebraska. His citation reads "While serving with a scouting column this officer's troop was attacked by a vastly superior force of Indians. Advancing to high ground, he dismounted his men, remaining mounted himself to encourage them, and there fought the Indians until relieved, his horse being wounded." He died aboard the steamship Prinz Friederich Wilhelm arriving in New York from Bremen, Germany.

JOSHUA BABCOCK was born in Westerly, Rhode Island, May 17, 170 7, and died there April 1, 1783. He was graduated from Yale College in the class of 1724, and was the earliest gra date who held a commission for services during the Revolution. In May, 1776, he was elected Major-General of the Co lony Brigade, which consisted of ten regiments for the Colony of Rhode Island. He was also a member of the State Couns el of War and appointed one of the committee of those who proceeded to New York to consult with General Washington res pecting the defense of Rhode Island.
HENRY BABCOCK served with General Putnam in the Boston Campai gn for a time, and in March, 1776, was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Rhode Island Colonies Brigade.

2. As a first lieutenant John was leading a scouting column of the 5th Ca valry near Spring Creek, NE, 16 May, 1869, when his column was attack ed by a vastly superior force of hostile Indians. John directed his m en to the high ground where he had them dismount to return fire. Despite t he danger, in order to lead, direct, and encourage his men by his fearle ss example, John remained in his saddle throughout the engagement despi te the fact that the fire was so intense his horse was wounded.
