Royal Reynolds was the sixth of eight sons born to George Gardiner Reynolds and Lucy M Pratt. He served as a Medical Doctor in the United States Army from 1909 to 1945. He died in 1971 and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
His brother, Charles Ransom Reynolds, Major General, United States Army, was Army Surgeon General, 1935-1939. His son, Brigadier General Royal Reynolds, Jr., was a West Point graduate who served in World War II and Korea. His older brother Col. Frederick Pratt was also an army surgeon. His brother George G, Jr. was an attorney, while his twin brother Robert was in banking. Three other brothers, an infant, George Ransom, and Thomas all died under 2 years of age. In 1910, Royal married Romietta Redman. They were the parents of Royal, Jr., Bettie and Lucy. Royal Jr followed in his father's footsteps with service in the military.
Royal was the grandson of William Wilson Reynolds and Sarah Gardiner, and Ransom Pratt and Sarah Alvord. The Reynolds, Pratt and Gardiner families were among the early settlers to the Chemung Valley.
