About Caleb Aldridge, Jr.
From Pam Wilson's Arledge Family History Project: Mostly notes of Don Aldridge of Oakboro, NC <daldridge@ctc.net>:
Don Aldridge writes: MOVED TO STEWART COUNTY, TENN IN EARLY 1800'S. SOLD HIS LAND THERE AND WAS BACK BESIDE HIS FATHER IN THE 1820 ANSON COUNTY, NC FEDERAL CENSUS.
It appears that either Caleb Sr. or his son Caleb Jr. went to Stewart County, Tennessee in the first decade of the 1800s, where his son Clement also ended up.
- named on a 1811 tax list in Stewart Co TN, along with Clement (numbers 111, 112).
- Caleb Arledge was in Stewart County and owned 48 acres, as named in an 1814 land survey dated 20 October 1814 describing a tract of 48 acres on the Elk Fork of the Piney Fork of the Little West Fork of the Red River, near the county line [with Montgomery County]. WItnesses were John Perry and William Whitfield. Other surveys note that Whitfield occupied the land. (see attached)
- Another document lists Caleb Arledge as having paid for the survey (or the 48 acres; it's not clear) named above.
- Also named in another survey dated 7 Feb 1814 to Thomas Dillon...Waters of the Elk Fork of the Piney Fork of Red River...48 acres entered in the name of Caleb Arledge on which William Whitfield now lives. FIled 25 July 1814. (Image attached)
- A second survey on 15 Aug 1814 for Burr Powell "on the waters of the Piney forks of the little west fork of the Red River near the line dividing Stewart and Montgomery Counties" adjacent Caleb Arledge's 48 acres "on which William Whitfield now lives" (image attached)
- Final formal assignment of Caleb's 48 acres on 24 May 1817 (document attached) [Note: Documents from Ancestry.com are attached to Caleb Sr's profile under Media Tab]
Need to find records of his selling the 48 acres in Tennessee.
Returned to Anson County by 1820.
In 1820 census next to his father Caleb Sr. However, the record is curious because it only shows one male under 10 and no male head of household, even though the name listed is Calep. Females are two under 10, one 10-16, and one 26-45.(see below)
1825--newspaper article (attached) lists Caleb Jr's Anson County property as up for sale by sheriff due to unpaid taxes.
ABOUT 1830 HE MOVED TO THE ROCKY RIVER SPRINGS AREA OF WHAT WAS THEN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, NC. (STANLY COUNTY, NC AFTER 1841). PW: I could not find him in any census in 1830.
1840 census, Montgomery Co, NC West Pee Dee District Males: 1 (15-20), 1 (40-50), Females 1 (5-10) and one (40-50)
Don writes: HE IS LISTED INTHE 1842 STANLY COUNTY PROPERTY TAX ROLLS AS OWNING 150 ACRES ON ALLIGATOR BRANCH.
HE IS SHOWN ON THE DEED AS ONE OF THE FIVE MEN WHO SIGNED THE NOTE TO PURCHASE LAND FOR A HOUSE OF WORSHIP. THE CHURCH WAS NAMED REHOBETH AFTER THE REHOBETH SPRINGS LOCATED NEARBY ON THE OLD WINFIELD ROAD.

CALEB AND REBECCA ARE ALMOST CERTAINLY BURIED IN THE REHOBETH CEMETERY, AS ARE MANY OTHER ALDRIDGES. ELIZABETH IS BURIED THERE WITH A HAND SCRIBED STONE MARKER.
ALSO SEE FRANKLIN RUDOLPH ALDRIDGE BOOK PAGE 189-190. THE CALEB MENTIONED AT THE BOTTOM OF 189 AND TOP OF 190 IS THE FATHER OF THE CALEB REFERENCED IN THE SUB HEADING," CALEB ALDRIDGE TO WHITFIELD."
THE NAME SPELLING FLIP-FLOPPED BETWEEN ALDRIDGE AND ARLEDGE MANY TIMES FOR THESE TWO INDIVIDUALS.
