About Capt. Anthony Eames

Surname has also been reported to be Ames. Immigrant Ancestor.

Date of birth might be 1595.

5. Anthony1 Eames (ThomasA)(6) (#2864) was born in Fordington, Dorsetshire, England circa 1595.(7) Anthony died in 1686 in Marshfield, MA, at 91 years of age.

He married Margery in probably, St.George, Dorset. (Margery is #2865.) Margery was born circa 1599 in probably, Dorsetshire, England. Margery died in probably, Marshfield, MA.

He was a churchwarden in the parish of Fordington, and signed the Bishops Transcripts in that office in 1623 and 1627. Having been an officer of his church, his motivation for emigration may have been more capitalist than religious. Antony Eames is listed among the passengers of the ship "Recovery of London", Gabriel Cornish, master, which sailed from the port of Weymouth to New England on 16 Mar. 1633. The Port Book, held in the P.R.O. of London, says of the passengers, "All planters & have carried with them diverse sorts of household stuff, apparell & other provisions for the necessary use of themselves, their wives, children and servants ..."

Anthony Eames and Margery had the following children:

About 1614 Anthony Eames married Margery (unknown - no proof she was a Pierce).

Their children, all born in England, were:

  1. Millicent Eames b. say 1615; m. by 1635 William Sprague
  2. Mark Eames b. say 1617; m. Hingham 26 May 1648 Elizabeth Andrews
  3. John Eames bp Fordington 24 Jan 1618[/19]; d. Hingham 29 Nov 1641
  4. Persis Eames bp Fordington 28 Oct 1621; m. by 1645 Michael Pierce
  5. Elizabeth Eames bp Fordington 13 Jun 1624; m. by about 1651 Edward Wilder
  6. Justus Eames bp Fordington 29 April 1627; m. Marshfield 2 May 1661 Mehitable Chillingsworth
  7. Margery Eames bp Fordington 5 Dec 1630; m. Hingham 20 Oct 1653 John Jacob
  8. Perhaps Abigail—c.1633 in Fordington, Dorset, England to c.May 1709 Scituate, Plymouth, Province of Massachusetts Bay)—the wife of Charles Stockbridge but this is only one of the possibilities.[1] More information is on her profile; in summary the husband of Persis Eames (Michael Pierce) in his will called Charles Stockbridge "my brother". Charles' wife's first name was Abigail, so one possibility is that Charles Stockbridge and Michael Pierce were brothers-in-law through their marriage to the Eames sisters, Abigail and Persis. – https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Eames-9

Notes

  • Anthony came over on the pilgrim ship "Recovery" in 1633. On Apr. 12, 1632, Anthony deposed in a tithe case that he was "of Fordington, Dorset, yeoman, where he had lived from infancy, born there, aged 40 or thereabouts." Departed Weymouth, England aboard the 'Recovery of London' on March 31, 1633/4, Gabriel CORNISH, master.
  • Lived at Fordington, St. George to 1631;
  • settled first at Charlestown in 1634/5;
  • freeman at Hingham, Mass. Bay Colony, Mar. 9, 1636/7; and
  • freeman at Marshfield, Plymouth Colony, Jun. 7, 1653.
  • Church warden at Fordington 1622, 1627 and 1631;
  • deputy to General Court 1637, 1638, 1643 from Hingham, and 1653 through 1658, 1661 from Marshfield, Plymouth Co., MA;
  • Lt. of the Hingham train band about 1638;
  • chosen Capt. of the train band 1644/5.

Although Anthony was chosen as Captain by the town of Hingham, an allowance was not granted by the magistrates when the townsmen proposed another choice. Anthony was granted land at Charlestown in 1634/5, and was granted a number of parcels of land at Hingham between 1636 and 1647. In Dec. 1651, he and son Mark purchsed 100 acres at Marshfield, settling there the following summer. Anthony acknowledged a deed of land to his son Justus EAMES on Jun. 28, 1670, the latest record found of him.

Biography

He was a churchwarden in the parish of Fordington, St George, and signed the Bishops Transcripts in that office in 1623 and 1627. He lived there to 1631.

Lieut. Anthony Eames, the first local commander of the town, of Hingham and was one of the first settlers, coming here in 1636, in which year a house lot was granted him on the lower plain. He seems to have been an able officer and a leading and trusted citizen, being a deputy in 1637, 1638, and 1643, and frequently holding positions of responsibility and honor in the town. Together with Allen, Joshua Hobart, and others, he was chosen to represent the town's interests in Nantasket lands, and in 1643 he with Allen and Samuel Ward had leave from the town to set up a corn mill near the cove. From Lieutenant Eames, through his three daughters,--Milicent who married William Sprague, Elizabeth who married Edward Wilder, and Marjory who married Capt. John Jacobs,--many of the people of Hingham are descended.

"Captain Anthony Eames or Ames, immigrant ancestor, was a proprietor of Charlestown, Massachusetts, as early as 1634. A few years later he removed to Hingham, Massachusetts, and in 1636 owned a house lot there on the Lower Plain.

From the first he appears to have been one of the foremost citizens of Hingham. He was admitted a freeman, March 9, 1636-7, and represented the town in the general court in 1637-38-39-43-44. He assisted in laying out the boundary between the Massachusetts and Plymouth patents. He was lieutenant of the military company, but when he was chosen captain there was a serious controversy between his friends and others, developing into a lasting difference that continued for several generations to divide the citizens of Hingham.

June 12, 1643, the town granted permission to Anthony Ames, Samual Ward and Bozoun Allen to set up a corn mill for the town; Gowen Wilson had been miller of the town; in future either Thomas Lincoln or John Pogger was to be the miller.

Anthony Eames removed to Marshfield, in Plymouth Colony, about 1650, and he and his son Mark bought a house and land together there December 10, 1651, and for many generations the family lived in the town. He was deputy to the general court at Plymouth in 1653-54-55-56-57-58-61, and was a member of the council of war. He was admitted freeman in the Plymouth Colony, March 1654-55. He also served the town as moderator. His wife Margery was admitted to the Charleston church September 13, 1635." (Cutter, p. 1027)

Anthony was a church warden in Fordington, England who set sail with his family, leaving from Weymouth, England on HMS "Recovery" of London. The captain of the ship was Gabriel Cornish with 26 families on board with personal goods and provisions travelling to America for a new life free of religious persecution. They arrived in Charlestown, Massachusetts in June of 1634. He was granted land in Charlestown in 1634 and acquired even more land in Hingham in later years. He served as a representative to the Massachusetts General Court for many years. He became a "Freeman" in 1636 and served as Lieutenant then Captain in the Massachusetts Colonial Militia in 1644 and 1645. He was a member of the Council of War in Plymouth and served as moderator of the town. He died in Hingham in 1686 at the age of 88 and was buried in Plymouth Colony. (wab)
