About Capt. Francis Joseph Grimm, Civil War Vet
In 1857, Francis is identified as a Captain in the New York State Militia Reserves.
At age 48, the Civil War brings active service with an enlistment date of 12 Sep 1861 in New York City, with "C" Company in the 66th Infantry and a rank of Captain. His muster out date was 23 Nov 1862.
Francis was born in Germany by all records known, though no records are known to me that identify his parents names.
He married Mary L. Wright in New York in about 1836. They had five children. Sadly Mary died in about the year 1852, before the age of 33.
The children are:
1). Mary L. Grimm, b. 1837 (no additional information)
2.) Susan Amelia Grimm, b. 1838; d. 1908; m1. Zadock Platt in 1869; m2. John Nudelfill Briggs in 1892; m3. John S. Wendell in 1903.
3.) Annie Elizabeth Grimm, b. 1841; d. 1912; m. William Charles Rogers in 1862.
4.) Sarah Jane Grimm, b. 1841; d. 1911 in New York; m. Sylvester Searing in 1863.
5.) Francis Joseph Grimm, b. 1843; d. 1878
The 1850 census lists him as a mason, prosperous, with $5000 net worth. Francis is at age 37 and his wife Mary is at age 30.
The 1860 census shows him now as a master mason. He is now with his second wife Margaret (maiden name not known). Susan and Annie are still in the house working as "book folders".
Francis died four years later on Oct. 19, 1866 at his home in New York City on East 58th Street, third house east of First Avenue.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 3 2022, 7:53:42 UTC
