--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Houston, Texas, April 6. -- Captain Fred Allen Rice, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed of all of Houston's townsmen, died suddenly this afternoon near La-Marque on the Galveston, Houston and Harrisburg train from Galveston. He was in conversation with a friend, when he threw his head back, gasped and died almost instantly. Dr. S.E. Cox of Galveston, who was on the train, was called to his aid. He extended the best treatment in reach at the time, but to no avail.

Capt. Rice was one of the best beloved citizens of Houston, and the announcement of his death this afternoon brought forth many utterances of sorrow. He was a brother of the late William Marsh Rice, and was recently appointed administrator of his estate.

Captain Rice came to this city about 1850, and since that time has been a citizen of this place. He was a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, and after coming to Texas married Mrs. Randle, nee Baldwin, a sister of Mr. Jonas Cutler Baldwin of this city. His children are Mrs. Joe S. Lummis, William Marsh Rice, Horace Baldwin, David, Benjamin Botts, Lillian Rice Timpson, Frederick Allen and George Converse. They were notified by wire today of the sudden death. Captain Rice was in his seventy-fifth year.
