Note: Lowe In 1715 Matthew Lowe and other pirates of Eleuthera (including John Darvill, Jr., John Cary, and John Kemp) seized a Spanish ship said to be carrying 11,050 pieces of eight. They were arrested by Thomas Walker and jailed in Nassau. Prior to their trial they were freed by Benjamin Hornigold. Captain Gideon Lowe and his brother are believed to have been shipwrecked in Bermuda. In the mid 1700's they sailed to Harbour Island, Eleuthera where Gideon married Nancy Saunders (daughter of Sarah and Nathaniel Saunders of Harbour Island). In 1783 Gideon Lowe participated in Colonel Andrew Deveaux's capture of Nassau from the Spanish and was rewarded with grants of crown land. Nancy and Gideon Lowe and their ten children moved to Green Turtle Cay, Abaco after the arrival of the Loyalists. Several branches of this family later immigrated to Key West, Florida. Biography

The Lowes came very early to the Bahama Islands; they appeared in Governor Phenney’s 1721-1726 list of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, and in Woodes Rogers’ 1731 Census (Gideon, Matthew, Samuel and John Lowe). In the Book “C” Census (circa 1740), are listed Eleuthera residents Gideon Low, wife Martha, and daughters Eliza and Martha. As well as Matthew Low.
Gideon Lowe Jr. was born to Gideon and Martha Lowe in the early 1750s.His baptism was recorded in Christ Church records 12 June 1755.<ref>The Wyannie Malone Hope Town Museum, Dolly Mae Genealogy Records OnlineDatabase (Internet site), at www.genealogy.hopetownmuseum.com (accessed 21 Apr 2016). Subscription required.[http://genealogy.hopetownmuseum.com/tng/getperson.php?personID=I903...]</ref> Captain Gideon Lowe married Ann "Nancy" Saunders, daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Saunders, about 1775. Their children included sons Benjamin, Matthew, John "Jockie", James "Jimmie", and William Lowe; and daughters Sarah, Ann, and perhaps Martha Lowe. Gideon was a mariner, shipwright, and owner of a vessel called the "Carpenter's Revenge." Gideon Lowe Jr. assisted Col. Andrew Deveaux in the capture of Nassau from Spain in 1783. For this service, he was awarded a grant of land in 1791 in Harbour Island (Lot #50) . After a devastating hurricane hitHarbour Island in 1805, the Lowes, along with other Briland families,moved to Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. Gideon received a grant of 240 acres at Angel Fish Creek, at Rocky Harbour, in 1807. Captain Lowe registered 13 slaves in the 1822 Slave Registration; by 1825, however, Benjamin Lowe undertook this task for his father. It wasnoted that Benjamin was "the eldest son and lawful son of Gideon Lowe, who from disability, being extremely old .. is unable to attend.." Captain Gideon Lowe Jr. died in 1833 in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. His will was written Jan 7, 1832; and proved Jul 26, 1833.
