Biography
Nancy "Ann" Saunders was born 10 March 1757 at Harbour Island, Bahamasto Nathaniel Saunders and Sarah Unknown Saunders.
Gideon Lowe bapt 12 Jun 1755 Bahamas, parents Gideon Lowe and his second wife Mary ___ Lowe. CCC records. Capt Gideon Lowe & Nancy Saunders, Lot # 50, Dunmore Town 1791 Lot Plan, Harbour Island. Lot #50 is on King and Princess Streets. Lot #49 Peter Bone. Lot #51 belonged to a John Roberts. Neighbour behind Lot 50 was a John Bethel. 1806 A hurricane wiped out many houses at Harbour Island. Perhaps after this, the family moved to Abaco. About 1800 - 1807 Captain Gideon Lowe and Nancy 'Ann' Saunders, with their 10 children and slaves, moved to GTC, Abaco on their boat Carpenter’s Revenge. Neighbors at Briland that transferred with him to GTC:Albury, Curry, Roberts, Russell, Saunders, Sawyer. 1807 Gideon Lowe was granted 240 acres at Angel Fish Creek, Rocky Harbour, Abaco. (Note: Angel Fish Point and Crab Cay, on Little Abaco, about 1960 became joined to Great Abaco by a narrow causeway in the area of Angel Fish Point.) 1810 Another Land grant on Spanish Cay, Abaco - north of GTC, north of Powell Cay which is off from Cooper's Town. Capt Gideon Lowe's Will, dated 7 Jan 1832, was registered in Book C4, pages 31-33. He made his “X” mark. The Will was proved Book C4 p 31-33 in 1838.
26 Jul 1833... Will proved after his death in May. Estate activity. 23 slaves on 1834 Slave Register - belonging to estate of Gideon Lowe: 6 Sep 1834 Admin. Estate of Gideon Lowe, Abaco. Executor: William Lowe, his youngest son who moved to Key West. Son William's family listedin Key West 1850 census.Capt Gideon Lowe's boat, Carpenter’s Revenge, sold in 1833 after hisdeath for $406.50. Proceeds divided, 1/3 to wife Nancy Lowe, 2/3rds equally divided between the children according to William Lowe's record book held in Key West Library History Room.
April 1993. At Nassau Archives, I, Joy Lowe Jossi, carefully held in my hands the tattered & torn remains of Capt Gideon Lowe's Will. The names of his children are obliterated in the old document. Tradition says Gideon Lowe and Nancy Saunders had ten children, five sons,Benjamin, Matthew, John, James, William; & five daughters whose names are noton the old torn document, but married to John Roberts (Executor), William Sweeting, Benjamin Roberts, B John Roberts, & Randal Adams married granddaughter of Gideon Lowe by his daughter Sarah. Another record gives a Sarah Lowe married to a John Roberts, an Executor to Gideon's will.
