Through John's wife Mary Bass we are related to President John Adams and John Quincy Adams. We have a beautiful love letter that he wrote his wife. It is here under the ‘ media ‘ tab . John CAPEN Capt was born on 26 Jan 1612 in Dorchester, Dorset, England. He died on 2 Apr 1692 in Dorchester MA. "JOHN [CAPEN], Dorchester, only s. of the first Bernard, came bef. his f. as is thot. was freem. 14 May 1634, m. 20 Oct. 1637, Redigon or Radigan Clap, had Joanna, b. 3 Oct. 1638, d. soon; John, 21 Oct. 1639; and his w. d. 10 Dec. 1645. Next, by w. Mary, d. of Samuel Bass of Braintree, m. 20 Sept. 1647, he had Samuel, b. at B. 29 July 1648; Bernard, 24 Mar. 1650; a d. 6 July 1652; ano. ch. 17 Nov. 1654; Preserved, 4 Mar. 1657; Joseph, 20 Dec. 1658, bapt. 2 Jan. foll. H[arvard] C[ollege] 1677; Hannah, 1 Oct. 1662; and Eliz. 29, bapt. 30 Dec. 1666, who d. at 13 yrs. He was of ar. co. 1646, deac. 1656, a capt. rep. 1671, 3-8, and d. 6 Apr. 1692. All of this name in our country, it is said, are descended from him."

He was baptized Jan 26,1612/3 at Dorchester, Co.Dorset, England, the son of Bernard Capen and Joan Purchase Capen.

John, a shoemaker by trade, may have arrived in New England with one or more of his older married siblings, before the July 1633 arrival of their parents. But, he may alternately have arrived with his parents on the unnamed ship from Weymouth, England that arrived at Boston on or about July 24, 1633 [John Winthrop's Journal, 1:129]. His father Bernard and brother-in-law Nicholas Upsall were first granted four acres of land at Dorchester on Aug. 5, 1633. John Capen, a minor until January 1633/4, was made freeman on May 14,1634.

His first wife, married Oct 20,1637 in Dorchester,MA, was Radigan Clapp Capen, the daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth ____ Clapp of Venn Ottery, Co.Devonshire.

His second wife, married Sept 20,1647, was Mary Bass Capen.

Children(by first marriage): Joanna Capen and John Capen Jr.

Children(by second marriage): Samuel Capen, Mary Capen Foster(first wife of James Foster), Bernard Capen, Preserved Capen, Joseph Capen, Hannah Capen Blake Humphrey, and Elizabeth Capen.

Capt. Capen was a shoemaker by trade. He was ordained a Deacon of the Dorchester First Church on Feb. 13, 1658/9, and at his death the Dorchester church entered in its record:

• 4th of Aprill 1692 Deacon John Capen a military officer 50 years at length a Capt: & Deacon of ye chh 34 years in His fourscoreth Year Rested from His Labors & Slept in ye Lord.

He was a Selectman 16 yrs, repeatedly Deputy to the General Court, Town Recorder, and Captain of the Militia in 1646.

His house was supposed to stand at the corner of Pleasant and Pond Streets in Dorchester.
