Baptized in Great Horkesley, Essex, 3 Sep 1612, son of John & Grace (Ravens) Sherman. A magistrate & soldier who came from Dedham, Essex to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the Elizabeth of Ipswich (on 30 Apr 1634, "John Sherman," aged 20, was enrolled at Ipswich as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth). Settled at Watertown MA. Death: "Mr. John Sherman Captain of the training band in Watertowne" died there 25 Jan 1690/1.
Married by 1638, Martha Palmer, daughter of WILLIAM PALMER {1638, Newbury} (on 10 Mar 1645[/6?], "Mrs. Martha Sherman wife [sic] of Capt. Jno. Sherman deceased the 7th of Feb 1700[/01?] "at Watertown]."
Sherman Genealogy by Charles Pomeroy Sherman states that John's father passed away in England...His mother remarried to Thomas Rogers...he then came to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1634 with his mother, her second husband (Thomas Rogers) and his half sister Elizabeth Rogers.
Captain John, son of John Sherman, was born in 1604 at Dedham, England. He came to Watertown, Massachusetts, with his father, in 1634. He was made freeman May 17, 1637. He was a land surveyor and a selectman many times from 1637 to 1680. In 1648 he was town clerk, and afterwards representative to the general court in 1651-53-63-82. In 1662 he was steward of Harvard college. In June, 1654, he was made ensign of the Watertown Company, and in 1680 he was made captain. His son Joseph received his land in Watertown. He was with Governor Winthrop when the northern boundary of Massachusetts was surveyed and when the lines were established at Wier's landing, Lake Winnepesaukee. He was an educated man, and was often called upon to manage town affairs. He married Martha, daughter of William and Grace Palmer. He died January 25, 1690-91. His wife died February 7, 1700-1701.
