Richard(A), William(B)) was probably born at East Bergholt, co. Suffolk, ca. 1591 and died at Watertown, Mass., on 3 June 1662. She married first at Wattisfield, co. Suffolk, on 26 Sept. 1611 JOHN SHERMAN, who was baptized at Dedham, co. Essex, on 17 Aug. 1585, son of Henry and Susan (Lawrence) Sherman and nephew of the Edmund Sherman whose tenant Grace's father had been. He was buried at Great Horkesley, co. Essex, on 24 Jan. 1615[/6]. Grace married secondly THOMAS ROGERS of Dedham, co. Essex, with whom she emigrated to New England ca. 1634. He was a proprietor of Watertown, Mass., 1636-37, admitted freeman 17 May 1637, and died there on 12 Nov. 1638, aged 50 (Bond p. 412). Grace married thirdly, as his second wife, ROGER PORTER of Watertown, who as a husbandman from Long Sutton, Hampshire, had emigrated in September 1638, aged 55, with four daughters. He was admitted freeman of Watertown 22 May 1639 and was made a selectman of Watertown in 1648, where he died on 3 April 1654 (Bond pp. 406-7, 910). (Bond [p. 865] is the source of the erroneous statement that Grace also married William(1) Palmer of Newbury; Grace's son John Sherman was a son-in-law of Palmer, not because Palmer was his stepfather but because John Sherman had married William Palmer's daughter Martha.) The undated will of Grace Porter was proved 17 June 1662 (Middlesex Co. PR File 12652), and has been printed in full in NEHGR 51 (1897) : 314. She named her son John Sherman, her daughter Elizabeth Smith, several grandchildren, and "my brother John Cooledge."”

John Sherman was christened on 15 July 1587 at Moze, Essex, England. He married Grace Raven, daughter of Richard Ravens, Rev. and Elizabeth Hedge, on 26 September 1611 at Dedham, Essex, England. John Sherman died on 24 January 1616 at Dedham, Essex, England, at age 28.

Biography

Note ===Records of the late genealogist, Rev. Henry B. Sherman, of Esopus, NY,are thought by some to be a more accurate work than the previous workof the late Rev. David Sherman of Wilbraham, Mass.

This however is debatable. He suggests that John of Dedham, son of Edmond Sherman and Anne Cleare were the parents of Capt. John Sherman. That particular son John is shown, by order of placement, in both records to have been the last child of this couple, although neither givesa date of birth for him. If this were correct, he would have been too young to have a child much before 1620. Capt. John was born by 1614(Poss. 1604).
Having looked at both records, I find the work of Rev. David Sherman to be the more scholarly. Rev. Henry Sherman's record is at times "confused" and while it purports to "correct" the former record I find it lacking any evidence to support his alternate theories. In defense of Henry, the record I have is an anonymous third party effort,published about 1890, using his compilations. Some records report that John married Grace Makin. One marriage date given is May 14, 1610. Grace was born 1589, according to that report.If this is so, that would be too late to make her the mother of Capt. John Sherman, if born 1604 as stated by Rev. David Sherman. It would seem that Capt. John was born between 1604 - 1614. Rev. Henry Sherman says he died 1690 at age 76, while Rev. David Sherman says he died Jan. 25, 1691, making his age about 87.

Gilly's Note:John Sherman was baptized in Dedham, Essex 17 August 1585 and was buried in Great Horkesley, Essex, 24 January 1615/6. He married in Wattisfield, Suffolk, 26 September 1611, Grace Ravens, born about 1591, probably in East Bergholt, Suffolk, daughter of Rev. Richard and Elizabeth (Hedge) Ravens. Grace married second by 1617 Thomas Rogers, with whom she immigrated to New England in 1634. He was buried in Watertown, Massachusetts, 12 November, 1638, and she married third Roger Porter. Grace died in Watertown 3 June 1662, leaving an undated Will proved 17 June 1662, naming daughter Elisabeth [Rogers] Smith and her son Daniel Smith; son John Sherman and his children John, Martha, Mary, Sarah and Joseph. “My cousin” John Sherman was to be overseer. When this Will was proved, Grace had a son living in England, but where, and whether he married and had a family, are not known.
