Military and Civic Activities===Matthew Sherwood was commissioned Ensign of the Fairfield County Troop, Aug. 1673, and of Fairfield Train Band, Oct. 1685; In April 1690 hebecame Lieut. of the Train Band, and Captain of the Fairfield County Troop raised for active service the same date. Matthew

also served as Deputy for Fairfield, May 1692, and as Justice of the Peace for several years.<ref name = FooF /> Matthew's sister Abigail Sherwood Lockwood appointed him, along with her brother-in-law Joseph Lockwood, to oversee her will, as did his father-in-law Thomas Fitch. The Court appointed him as Guardian for Caleb and Agur, children of the late Zechariah Fairchild, and to oversee the estate of Joseph Jackson and several others.<ref>Jacobus, Donald Lines, History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, Vol. 1, p. 383, 205, 196, 322</ref> Matthew Sherwood was clearly thoroughly trusted by his relatives and fellow townsmen.

Death, Will, Burial ===Matthew Sherwood died in Stratfield on 26 Oct 1715. He signed his will on 14 Apr 1713, and it was proved 21 Dec 1715. The will mentions sons Samuel and Lemuel, grandchildren Ruth Treadwell, (daughter of lateson Matthew), Jemima (daughter of late son John) and daughters Mary Fitch, Sarah Fayerweather, Ann Trowbridge and wife Mary.<ref name = FooF />

Matthew was buried in the Old Stratfield Cemetery, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut. His gravestone is inscribed "Here lyes the Body of: CAPT. MATTHEW SHERWOOD, departed this lifeye 26th of October, 1715, in ye 72 Year of his age."<ref>Findagrave memorial 10044159, includes a photo</ref>
