About Capt. Thomas Triplett, Jr.
Thomas Triplett, with his brother William, were officers in the Virginia militia (Grayson's Regiment). During the Revolution he at least once escorted Martha Washington to see General Washington, an indication of the family's relationship. Unlike his brother though, Thomas didn't serve very long. It seems that when he was inoculated for smallpox, he became very ill and had to resign his commission, his resignation being accepted by his friend and neighbor George Washington. It would also seem he never fully recovered, as he died not long after in 1780.
Thomas and William were close friends to George Washington, they were neighbors and went hunting regularly, as well as serving the vestry of the same church. They also were experienced stone masons and did repairs and enlarged the mansion at Mt. Vernon for George Washington.
