The name of the first wife of William Daniel is not known. His two oldest children (sons) were by this wife. William married second Jochabed, maiden name not proved, about 1674. She was the mother of his other children, excepting James.

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L62H-DLY has an advisory about the probable father of some of the boys.

Y DNA testing of descendants of at least two sons of James Daniel shows that their Y DNA does not match the Y DNA of descendants of his supposed "brothers" William Jr. and Robert Daniel. This, along with the wording of the will of William Daniel Sr., suggests that James was not the biological son of William Daniel Sr. He was likely a child of Jochebed and a previous husband or partner, but was raised as a son of William Daniel.

Disambiguation

Captain William Daniel of Middlesex County, Virginia is not the husband of Dorothy Forth or the son of Peter Daniel. The William Daniel who married Dorothy Forth and is the son of Peter lived and died in England. His 1695 will confirms he is the husband of Dorothy Forth, naming his deceased wife Dorothy and his brother-in-law Hugh Forth. Images of all pages of the will are attached to the correct William Daniel in Family Search with ID: LTNF-18L. Here is the direct link to his profile: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LTNF-18L.

There are many sources attached to this individual. The direct link for Captain William Daniel of Middlesex County, Virginia is here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LC77-H9K.

This makes the birth date and place you have shown for Captain William incorrect. His FamilySearch profile shows the best information we currently have along with rationale, and where possible, primary evidence. The death date you show is unproved. Currently, his death date is narrowed from his last attendance at a vestry meeting and the probate of his will. We are trying to narrow his death date using deeds and other primary source documents. He is not buried in Christ Church cemetery, but is most likely buried on the Daniel family land in Middlesex county. None of the early Daniels are recorded as buried in the various Christ Church cemeteries.

Please reach out if you have questions. If you don't have access to FamilySearch, I would be happy to set up a quick Zoom to walk you through the evidence. Once you review it, I would be very grateful if you would unlink Dorothy Forth as Captain William Daniel's wife and instead use Mrs. William Daniel since his first wife's name is still unknown.

Also, for future reference, there is no evidence whatsoever that Jochebed was a Smith. Some researchers have made that conclusion because of the will of Captain William Daniel. I have been going page-by-page through many Middlesex County records and find that William was very close to John Smith as they served together on the Christ Church vestry, but William is also very close to about 6 others from that board. There was no doubt they were close friends, but no evidence of familial relationship.

I feel like we are doing a disservice to our ancestry by continuing to allow incorrect relationships to be published.

Any help is appreciated!!

William Daniell (c. 1625-1698) was born in England and received land in Middlesex County, Virginia in 1669. Three years later, on October 5, 1672, he received land in Lancaster County for three headrights. He was in the vestry of the Great Church in Middlesex in 1684 and was made Church Warden in the next year. During that year he was paid 1,400 lb. of tobacco for "railing in the communion table." He continued to appear in the church records until 1691, and was always referred to as "Captain". In England he married twice: first to Dorothy Froth [sic: unknown] by whom he had two sons, William and Robert; after her death he married Jochebed Smith [sic: unproven] from whom our family descends. The overseers of William Daniell's will were John Smith, Sr. and Maurice Cocke. John was the son of Alexander Smith, and Jochebed was probably John's sister [sic: unproven]. Maurice Cocke was John's wife's brother.

The children of William and Jochebed Smith [unproven] Daniell were Mary, Richard, James, Agatha, Katherine, John, Elizabeth, and Ann.

The son, James Daniell (1680-1748) married Margaret Vivion. The children of James and Margaret Daniells were Rachel, Charles, Peter, Margaret, James, John, Phebe, Vivion, and Susannah.

Rachel, born 14 October 1704, married Thomas Amis on 14 November, 1722. her children included John (1724-1764), Frances, Thomas (1732-1764) and William (1734-1813). She died in 1784.
