Category: Original 46 Purchasers of Taunton Category: Men Aged 16-60 Able to Bear Arms, 1643
Biography
Date of Birth ===The date of birth of George Macey of Taunton is uncertain. The fact that he was probably married about 1650 suggests that he was probably born sometime in 1620-1627. Although he is listed among the 46 "first purchasers" of Taunton, that does not necessarily mean that he was amongthe initial settlers in 1638 or 1639. The first record of him is his inclusion on a 1643 list of those of Taunton aged 16-60 who were eligible for military service,<ref name="PlymRec8p195"/> which confirms that he was born in or before 1627. The first record of George's ownership of land is a grant to him by the town of Taunton of a lot in 1649,<ref name="TauntHist63"/> which is also the date of the earliest record of his first public office,<ref name="PlymRec2p139"/> both consistent with the proposition that he was probably born sometime in 1620-1627.
Place of Birth ===George's place of birth has not yet been determined. However, based onhis estimated date of birth, he was probably born somewhere in England.
Parentage ===The parentage of George Macey of Taunton is unknown. Macey and its variants were a very common surnames in England and sufficient evidence is lacking to connect him to any particular Macey family. No evidence has been found that suggests that he was related to Macy-24|Thomas Macey of Salisbury and Nantucket.
Immigration ===George's date and manner of immigration are unknown. As mentioned above, the first record of George is his inclusion on a 1643 list of thoseof Taunton aged 16-60 who were eligible for military service.<ref name="PlymRec8p195"/> The absence of earlier records suggests either thatGeorge immigrated shortly before 1643 or that he immigrated perhaps earlier as a minor.
Marriage ===George married Street-37|Susanna Street. Their marriage is established by the reference in her father's will to Susanna Mason,<ref name="TauntHist182"/> which is generally agreed to have been a mis-recordation of Susanna Macey.<ref name="Street5"/> George Macey's close relationship with Susanna's father, Nicholas Street. is evidenced by the fact that George served as Nicholas's attorney in connection with the sale of his Taunton property.<ref name="QuarterMillen256-9"/>
Based on the estimated date of birth of their first-born child (1651),they were probably married about 1650. Since both George and Susanna were residents of Taunton at the time, they were no doubt married there.
Children ===George and Susanna had the following children, all no doubt born in Taunton:* Macey-23|Elizabeth, b. perhaps about 1651,<ref name="MarriageBased"/> m. 15 May 1672 Capt. John Hodges at Taunton,<ref name="TauntonVR2p320"/><ref name="TauntHist62"/><ref name="Street5"/><ref name="Hodges73"/> d. 29 Jan 1718/9 at Norton, Massachusetts<ref name="Hodges73"/>* Macey-2|Sarah, b. perhaps about 1653,<ref name="SarahProfile"/> m. perhaps about 1676 Samuel Blake at Taunton<ref name="SarahProfile"/><ref name="TauntHist62"/><ref name="Street5"/>* Macey-21|Mary, b. perhaps about 1656, m. 1st about 1679 Thomas Williams in Taunton,<ref name="TauntHist62"/><ref name="Street5"/> m. 2d 1707 Rev. James Keith in Bridgewater<ref name="TauntHist62"/>* Macy-300|Hannah, b. perhaps about 1661,<ref name="MarriageBased"/> m. 6 Feb 1682/3 James Blake in Dorchester,<ref name="HannahMarriage"/><ref name="TauntHist63"/> d. 1 Jan 1683/4 in Dorchester<ref name="HannahDeath"/>* Macey-35|Rebecca, b. 1663,<ref>Based on supposedly being 75 at her time of death.</ref><ref name="TauntHist63"/> m. 1st March 12, 1689/90 Benjamin Williams,<ref name="TauntonVR2p320"/><ref name="TauntHist63"/><ref name="Street5"/> m. 2d 29 Aug 1706 James Leonard at Taunton,<ref name="RebeccaMarriage"/><ref name="TauntHist62"/> d. 3 Apr 1738 (in her 76 year)<ref name="RebeccaDeath"/>* Macey-53|Deborah,<ref name="TauntHist63"/><ref name="Street5"/> b. perhaps about 1670,<ref name="DeborahDOB"/> m. 5 Jan 1697/8 Daniel Throop at Bristol, Rhode Island,<ref name="DeborahMarriage"/> d. between December 1706 and March 1712.<ref name="DeborahDeath"/>
Son Samuel? ===There is a record of a Samuel Macy/Macey who is listed as an "associate" in the August 1672 and March 1683/4 deeds for the Taunton South Purchase.<ref name="QuarterMillen304-7"/> The "Genealogy of the Macy Family," which focuses on the descendants of Thomas Macy of Salisbury and Nantucket, states that there is also a record of a Samuel Macy as an inhabitant of Taunton in 1668;<ref name="MacyGen9"/> however no copy of that record has been found online. It is possible, if not probable, that Samuel Macey was a son of George Macey, who perhaps never marriedand died before the date of George's will (thus explaining why neither he nor any wife or children of his are mentioned in that will). If Samuel was listed as an inhabitant of Taunton in 1668, that suggests that he was born in or before 1647. That is is 4 years earlier than the estimated date of birth of George's eldest confirmed child (Elizabeth,b. about 1651) and would mean either that George's wife, Susanna, wasprobably born earlier than her currently estimated 1629 date of birthor that Samuel was the son of George by a prior marriage. It is also quite possible that Samuel Macey was not George's son and perhaps not even related.
Public Life ===According to Emery's "History of Taunton," George was surveyor of the town in 1649, 1655 and 1668 and constable in 1650. In 1656, he was directed "to order all matters in & about the erecting of seats in the meeting-house and to seat the inhabitants therein." He was selectman from 1671 to 1686 inclusive; deputy to the General Court in 1672-1677 andin 1686. He was on a committee appointed in the several towns "to take invoice of the liquors, powder, shott and lead brought into the government." He was ofter called up to take inventories of and to settle estates, to bound lands, etc. He was one of the men appointed "to ordertown affairs" in 1648, 1650 and 1658 and was one of the magistrates for Plymouth County in 1690.<ref name="TauntHist62"/>
George was appointed as a Lieutenant of the Taunton militia in 1665<ref name="Taunton329"/> and was often subsequently referred to in records by that title. He was promoted to Captain of the town militia in 1690.<ref name="Taunton332"/>
Will; Death ===George made his will on June 20, 1693. An abstract of his will was printed at 62:234. In his will, he described himself as "of Taunton," made bequests to to daughter Elizabeth Hodges, grandson Samuel Hodges, daughter Sarah Black [Blake], daughter Mary Williams, daughter Rebecca Williams, daughter Deborah, and wife Susannah. He appointed his wife, Susannah, to be sole executrix and John Hall and Joseph Willis to be overseers.<ref name="Will"/> The children appear to be listed in birth order. Daughter Hannah is presumably not mentioned because she died in1684. Daughter Deborah is mentioned only by her first name since she did not marry until 1698. His will was proved on September 7, 1693.<ref name="Will"/> George Macey, died on August 17, 1693.<ref name="TauntHist62"/>
