About Captain John Wood
DAR
DAR Ancestor #: A128011
Parents
Very few trees hypothesize about the parents of Captain John Woods. I've given him the parents most consistent with the DNA matches that exist to other Wood descendants. Dates (barely) work out to allow him to be the son of Jacob Wood and Johanna Daniels, which would yield the best DNA match. However, it is also possible that John is really the son of a brother of Jacob's, and not Jacob himself.
A marriage record recorded in New York City between a John Woods and a Lavinah Strange date 3/17/1761 seems to indicate a brother by the name of James Woods, who may be a son of Jacob's, but also may indicate another closely related birth father.
Place of birth
Trees give John's place of birth as either New York City or Kings County, NY. If he's a son of Jacob Wood, then he was born either in Woodbridge NJ or on Staten Island - probably the latter.
Wives
There are four marriage records for a John Wood or John Woods that take place at the time John was thought to be in the town. These are:
- Elizabeth Leventon, New York City, 1759
- Lavinah Strange, New York City, 1761
- Catharina Schumacher, Claverack, NY, 1785
- Rebecca Cain, Claverack, NY, 1789
If these are all marriages of the same John Wood, then all but the first one produced children, which helps explain why John had so many.
The standard treatment of John agrees only that Rebecca Cain was his last wife, but then does not explain the large age difference between them, or the children attributed to him that are not issues of Rebecca. I am uncertain why this is.
DNA
DNA links the Woods male who married Johanna Daniels with the Woods descendants who emigrated to Leeds County, Ontario, via Claverack, New York. There are few records but his name was likely "Jacob". I would guess that "Jacob" was at least an uncle of Captain John, if the web trees are right, but there's no reason that Captain John could not even be a son. The DNA would work best that way in fact.
