They were married Nov 5,1782. He was the son of Joseph Root III and Mary Russell Root of Northfield and Sunderland. Children(by first marriage): Philip Root, Elisha Root, Moses Root, Mary Root, Abigail Root, Joseph Root V, Martin Root, and Elijah Root. E. B. Root's records state that Joseph moved to Montague, MA 11 Nov 1736. J. P. Root states that Joseph "removed in 1740 to that part of Sunderland called Hunting Hills, and afterwards (in 1753) incorporated in the town of Montague. "J. P. Root writes that in 1759 it was voted by the town to buy the shell of Lt. Clapp for ££1 10s. and to allow Capt. Joseph Root 20s. for blowing the same, on the Sabbath, for one year. Evidently he was a man of strong lungs, and he was known as an active, intelligent citizen, was selectman of the town, etc.
