Joshua was born at Middle Neck Hundred in Anne Arundel County.
On 16 May 1711, Joshua was wed to Ann Ridgely at Christ Church, Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Location: 39° 11.071′ N, 76° 49.626′ W. Formerly in Anne Arundel County, it is now in Columbia, Howard County, Maryland. The marker, erected by the Maryland Historical Society, is located at the intersection of Oakland Mills Road and Dobbin Road. From the marker: Christ Episcopal Church, 1711, Original log chapel of ease, Queen Anne’s Parish, erected on "New Years Gift," a present from the Proprietary to Edward Dorsey and Charles Carroll.
In October of 1711, Joshua was commissioned a Justice of the Peace for Anne Arundel County. He became Captain of the Provincial Militia.
Joshua & Ann were blessed with ten children, five sons and five daughters:

Joshua's tombstone is marked "JED," indicating his middle name of Edward. Christ Episcopal Church now has two small cemeteries: the slightly remote one with older tombstones, where Joshua was laid to rest, and the one by the church with newer ones.
