John Armstrong, 'The pedigree of the family of Armstrong' (National Library of Ireland Ms 5216) states he was Cornet in his brother Philip's regiment; was promoted to command a troop; sold his commission inn 1717 and retired to his house at Amthill Bedfordshire; became a Justice of the Peace; died 7 January 1747 aged 86; married Frances Thompson daughter of Lord Haversham at Great Russell Street, London. The version continued by the Rev. W. A. Armstrong (1813) gives the death date 7th January 1747/8 and the place of marriage as Lord Haversham's house.
