About Captain Timothy Conklin

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Conklin-850

Timothy Conkling, son of John and Elizabeth (Allsaebrook) Conkling, was born about 1640 based on a marriage date of about 1667. According to one source, he was born after his parents removed to Long Island.[1] According to another source, Timothy was born about 1640, either in England, or Salem, Massachusetts. He was the founder of the Huntington line of the family. He first appeared in Huntington, New York, February 4, 1660, when the town agreed he shall keep his home lot, as well as his father's.[2]

Timothy2 Conklin (Sr.), of Huntington, born by 1640, died apparently in the Spring of 1714 at Huntington, as based on an open account he had with Henry Lloyd which was closed in March 1714.[2]

The generally reliable Josephine C. Frost states positively, but without citing evidence, that he married Martha, daughter of Thomas Wickes, of Wethersfield and Stamford, Connecticut. This seems plausible, as the contemporary record of his son Timothy’s family in the Huntington Town Records reveals that the latter named his eldest daughter Martha. {see Notes below}

Unfortunately Wickes’s will, in bequeathing £4 to his “daughter Martha” and 20s. to “her child” (unnamed), fails to supply Martha’s marital surname; and the author of the 1904 Weekes genealogy was unable to adduce any evidence for the name of her husband.

Another work of lesser reliability states, without documentation, that Timothy Conklin m. instead, Sarah Scudder. {Appears to be different Timothy, same era}

Torrey assumes an agnostic position on the matter, listing both wives as possibilities, while also showing a Sarah Scudder of this generation as the wife of a John Conklin.

Research Notes

Confusion between two Colonial Conklin families is discussed at length in "Two Colonial Conklin Famlies in America", Honor Conklin, 2011. On Page 18, the author is careful to state that Timothy Conklin "... is believed to have married MARTHA WICKES, the daughter of Thomas Wickes".
