William Barton, the grandfather of Barton Warren, whose will was proved in Charles County on 22 September 1717, appears to have been the father of William Barton of Prince George's County, Maryland, whose will was dated 19 April 1703 and proved on 06 November 1705. Both had relatives named Smoote and Hungerford. William Barton of Prince George's County owned land in Charles County. His will was witnessed by John Warren who also inherited personalty. Other legatees were wife Sarah; daughter Katherine; daughter Sarah, who inherited land adjoining Zachiah Swamp which was in the possession of his father William Barton; Thomas Gant; son-in-law Bazil Waring, who got 300 acres in Charles County; son-in-law Marsham Waring; cousin Elizabeth Smoote; sister Margaret Hungerford; and John Nathan Smoote and his brother William, providing that they make over to their brothers Thomas and Charles Smoote land bequeathed to them by their father Thomas Smoote. Other witnesses were Thomas Greenfield and Benjamin Berry. Wife Sarah was appointed as executrix with Thomas Brooke, Thomas Greenfield, John Wight, Colonel Walter Smith, Samuel Queen and Thomas Smoote to serve as trustees of the large estate in the event of the death of Sarah during the minority of the children whose bequests consisted of many tracts of land. Since William Barton of Prince George's County died before William Barton of Charles County, William Barton of Charles County would not mention him in his will. On the other hand, William Barton of Prince George's County mentions his father William in his will as having possession of land on Zachiah Swamp which was in or near adjoining Charles County. The father of William of Prince George's undoubtedly was William of Charles County. William Barton of Prince George's left personalty to his sister Margaret Hungerford. William Barton of Charles County made a bequest of personalty to a granddaughter Mary Hungerford. William Hungerford of Charles County, by his will dated 22 January 1704 and proved on 14 March 1704/5, had legatees, wife Margaret; sons William, Thomas, John, Charles and Barton Hungerford; and daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Mary Hungerford. Wife Margaret was named executrix with son Barton to assume that responsibility if Margaret died during the minority of the children. Sarah, the wife of Colonel William Barton, Jr. of Prince George's County, Maryland, (1662-1705) was the widow of Basil Waring and daughter of Richard Marsham by Katherine, his first wife. Katherine Barton, daughter of William and Sarah, married Captain John Murdock. A transcript of the will of Colonel William Barton, Jr. identifies his heir as John Waring of the Waring family of Prince George County, instead of John Warren. Also he was quoted as requesting his father William Barton to"leave ‘my wife, executrix of his estate (as he had formerly left me’)."
