About Carl Frederic Abbott
Worked on Salinas Police Force until ordered overseas with 40 Tank Co. of Salinas in September 1941. (His formal enlistment date was February 10, 1941.) He served with the 194 Tank Battalion as a tank commander. He received a Bronze Star Medal with V Device on January 5, 1942 for heroic achievement which was presented posthumously to his mother by General Mark Clark on August 13, 1947. He was forced to participate in the Bataan Death March after becoming a POW when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. He was held at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan POW camps. He died of malaria & malnutrition on October 3, 1942.on Luzon Island, the Philippines.
