Carl and Ada farmed near Spencer for several years. Upon moving to the township of Spencer in 1940, Carl owned a successful car dealership. He was a very successful poker player and ran a still during the Prohibition. He eventually sold the dealership and became the territory sales agent for Omaha World Herald newspaper. Carl enjoyed carpentry as a hobby, and made a pontoon houseboat, which he named “Moonbeam” upon which he and Ada enjoyed their fishing at Ft Randall Dam, near Yankton, SD. He also built a cabin at the dam, where he and Ada enjoyed much of their retirement years until Carl’s death.
