About Hilda Karoline NELSON
The oldest of seven children, Hilda's mother made her stay home to care for them if any were ill. Hilda only went to school to the 6th grade, but she never lost the desire to learn. She always had a newspaper and a dictionary by her side, and often asked the meaning of a certain word she saw in the paper. She was quite embittered by the fact that she didn't have the opportunity to get more education, and was disgusted by her two younger brothers (Gus & Harry) because they didn't like formal education and were troublemakers in school. She always stressed that her own three sons get an education.
Hilda and Ernest lived on a farm between Bristow and Spencer, Nebraska, from 1931 to 1958 when they moved to Bristow, and then in 1961, they bought a house in Spencer. Hilda resided in this home until April 1974 when she went to the Butte Nursing Home. She died of congestive heart failure at the age of 84.
Son Morris purchased the home farm; and upon his retirement, son Raymond purchased the Spencer home.
