About Caroline Susan Cummings
Bio written by Shirley Conley Research done 1985-2018.
Susan Caroline Lathrop was born on March 2, 1827 to Azel and Susan (Ellis) Lathrop in Chelsea, Vermont. Her father was a prominent and successful businessman operating iron ore mines throughout New York and later in Michigan. The town of Lathrop, MI was founded by her father.
Susan married Michael Cummings in Essex, NY. Her first born son, Andrew Cummings, was born in 1845. By 1849, the Cummings family had moved to Watertown, Wisconsin.
In 1881, she and Michael moved to Chicago to be closer to her children. After Michael Cummings death, she moved in with her daughter, Mary Anastasia (Cummings) Coles in Chicago. Susan died of pneumonia in 1909. Her remains were sent to St. Bernard's cemetery in Watertown, WI.
Susan is a descendant of Rev. John Lathrop, a Puritan minister from Egerton, Kent, England who came to Scituate, MA in 1634. He was a representative of the general court and a minister at Scituate & Barnstable. His work is found in Governor Winthrop's journal.
Susan's mother, Susan (Ellis) Lathrop is a descendant of Capt. Richard Ransom who fought in our revolutionary war. Her ancestry can be traced to Edward Dotey, who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620.
Susan was one of ten children.
