Carrie Ellen Wurster

Life

Carrie Ellen Fink was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1869. She eventually made her way to Philadelphia, where she married Joseph Albert Wurster, the son of two German immigrants, in 1889. He was an entrepreneur in the wholesale grocery business. They had six children, three of whom continued in the family's grocer tradition.

Carrie lived to see multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren be born. She died in 1948 of acute pancreatitis.

Recollections

Reportedly, Carrie Ellen Wurster was quite interested in genealogy. A family story that I was told is that Carrie had a family tree researched and made up, which showed her relationship to the illustrious Jacobi family (seemingly true), including to the famous mathematician, Carl Jacobi (which I cannot confirm):

Unfortunately, the story goes that she hid or destroyed the tree when she discovered there were also horse-thieves in it. I have no idea who these horse-thieves might have been.
